I have a 90' Auto and it's a dog in the power department. Even having a manual would make all the difference in the world. If I didn't get it for such a cheap price I would have bought a manual 240sx.

But it's getting an RB swap anyway so i'm keeping it out of races till then :)

The 90 still probably has full compression. The 91 is probably TIRED... and unless it's been immaculately maintained, it's probably hurting for power.

Hopefully the 5-speed will be used to its full advantage by the driver (most are not).

The K&N, plugs and wires are irrelevant.

^^^ all true, the sohc however could be losing power from the exhaust depending upon the exhaust.

To go a little futher than Smith........ it depends on the 5 speed driver.

I think the 5 speed have advantage because you can adjust the power of the car in each gear.

If anybody ever drove the exact same car (or a car with similar horsepower) but different transmission, you will know that the 5 speed is 5 times much faster because the driver can control when to shift to the next gear instead like a auto when the transmission change it for you automatically.

Since it's a 90 vs a 91, the 90 is lighter, another advantage.

You do realize unless you're completly stupid, atleast with any automatic i've ever driven, EVER, you can determine where it shifts also, infact you can probably optimize it more do to longer gears, being as there are only 4, but that is usually true more with high hp/tq cars like a corvette or something similar. The only thing you couldn't do is take it past redline....

Any auto i've ever drivin the shift point is determined only by throttle it seems, so if you just floor it should shift at redline, and if you want it to shift before that, let off a little bit until the revs you are at is greater than the throttle cut off and bam you have just shifted. It's really not difficult.

i think you're missing my point, i never said you can't shift a auto, I'm pretty sure there are auto expert out there who knows different techniques because they wish to do it.

have you ever notice when driving a manual, it depends on the acceleration you're using. let's take 2nd gear for example, when you step on the accelerator lightly, you're driving slowly, but when you floor it, the gear becomes 10 times way more powerful then expected. in a auto, if you floor it, the throttle response really sucks, you will feel the car easing slowly and smoothly according to acceleration. you can use a more torquey gear, still it won't help because you sacrifice HP for torque if switch in those gears.

please remember, this is just a opinion, so don't get crazy on me. i know the car you're talking about is dragging domestic, which really does have a somewhat of an impressive auto transmission because i've seen new manual cobra getting smoked by the auto 68 GT350.

I agree with zombieman on his comment about the 5 speed VS auto. I have a 92 explorer with a 5 speed and a friend of mine has a 94 with the auto transmission (same body style, no difference) I've driven both and the power difference between his and mine is astounding. You would think we have 2 different engines and mine has 60k more miles on it than his.

We've had this discussion before....

The manual vs. auto thing is tired. It depends on the vehicle. The 2 old-school, tired-arse cars that fast_s13 mentioned are slow as hell anyway. The 5-speed has the advantage, since the autotrans in that car sucks. It's not optimized for performance, because it's an ECONOMY car.

But zombie, to say something like, "the 5 speed is 5 times much faster" is just ridiculous. I've driven the Roush-prepped Mustang Cobras at Bondurant dozens and dozens of times... Both 5-speed and auto. My lap times are comparable with each car (somewhat slower for auto). Put a 6-speed G35 and an automatic side by side and the differences are miniscule. The weight actually has MORE of an impact than the mode of shifting. A bad driver in the 6-speed will get his arse kicked by the automatic driver (I know, we've tried it...).

Finally, "seat of the pants" is irrelevant. Unless your a$$ has a calibrated dyno, it means nothing. The sensation of acceleration is much greater in a manual vehicle. It's been proven that a louder exhaust gives the PERCEPTION of faster acceleration even where no change exists.

Anyway, back to the topic. I've got $20 on the 90, because it's got less miles and hasn't lost compression.
