Ok, got a good deal on a really nice condition Q45:

117k One owner, dealer service records (all original paperwork)

I have replaced the following fluids:Oil, Transmission (t-tech), coolant, rear differential

The car runs great, but I have a couple concerns:1. When accelerating at fairly low speeds say 10-15mph through 30-40 mph I sometimes get some hesitancy... and then acceleration picks up again. No problems with stalling or engine shutoff. Acceleration is generally good otherwise (not having another benchmark Q45 to test against).2. I noticed the trunk does not "pop" open when the truck release is hit. I have set the switch in the glove compartment to "on". It seems a spring is missing or inop, but when I looked and the hinged in the trunk I couldn't see anything readily amiss.3. Some of the backlighting on the controls for the ac/heater control are inop - the buttons that direct the air are the worst... How much hassle is it to fix these lights?4. CD changer is inop - display reads error - not a major concern, seems like there are some options for repair.

Re: #1 - From what I have read on the forum the most likely causes sound like fuel pump/controller, throttle body that needs cleaner, or injectors. The prior owner told me he already replaced two of the injectors and that it was the only major repair. I do hear a humming from the backseat, but only when I turn on the car (just turn on the accessory power). It sounds like a motor, but it isn't the power antenna. I don't know if this is the fuel pump?

I will be taking it to a dealer to see what they say... BTW I see the term "Consult" referred to in the forum - does this term mean taking the car to the mechanic, or does it involve some sort or specific diagnostic software process?

Any suggestions or insight appreciated!

It is the fuel pump if you hear it after it charges the fuel lines initially.

Be sure to read all posts by Q45tech as you will get a great education.

You didn't mention what fluids you are using. Have no idea what t-tech is.

Give me a call between the 7th and 15th as I will be in Seattle and even have to go over to MS at some point. I'll look at and listen to your car.

It's the Seattle area code three hundred eighty-seven hundred.

We'll talk about PS-HICAS fluid also.

Welcome to our club.

Thanks Brian!

So - if it is the fuel pump, then I would hear it when driving/idling? If that is the case I don't believe it is the problem - the noise is definitely when I turn the key to accessory power (and briefly when I turn the car off).

BTW the engine is the quietest I have ever owned. At idle I barely hear the engine and there is no vibration felt/heard in the cabin.

T-TECH is the machine used by Jiffy Lube to flush the transmission fluid...

Re: fluid - I switched to synthetic oil from the mystery oil the car was using before.

Eventually I would like to find a reliable shop in the area to take it to, however I am new to the area - so if anyone has any suggestions for Seattle's eastside...

On Lola, I hear the ABS controller every time I start the car. Usually I hear it when I am backing up, out of the parking place. I can feel it in the brake pedal, as well.

Welcome to Q ownership!

Absolutely... I have really been enjoying driving the car - so much "tighter" than my Volvo 850 and even an Audi S4 I have driven. Both those cars developed many rattles and creaks over the years. The Q rides like it was formed from a single piece of steel :-)

It was real stiff for its time, still pretty good today.

Check into a FSTB from Jeff if you want to tighten up the front end.

Hello neighbor - welcome to Q45 ownership! Where did you find your Q45, just curious?Infiniti of Kirkland charges 125$ for diag (put it on consult). There is a nice lady (i don't remember her name) service consultant. She will help you to obtain service records. Just give her a VIN and she'll hook you up with print out.

"Consult" is the name of a Nissan diagnostic tool. Plugs into the computer port on your car (nowadays it is an ODB-II port; in your 1994, it was OBD-I) and figuring out what is going on - with a lot of things that the on-board diagnostics can read!

Thanks for the info! I bought it from a gentlemen in Puyallup - just happened to get it the first day it was listed in one of the local papers.

Scheduled a Consult for Friday - question though... with no lights illuminated (check engine or otherwise), what will they be able to glean from that? I assume they run the car with that diag running? Or is there historical info stored they can retrieve?

Thanks!

The biggest thing you want done is a "Power Balance" test... ask for it specifically. This test sets the overall engine speed, and then kills once cylinder at a time, and measures how many of the overall RPM are lost. The result is that you can see how much each cylinder is contributing to the overall engine power. Typically, low results on one or two cylinders means that there is an injector issue. Ideally, you'll find each cylinder contributing the same RPM number. Most dealer techs. think that as long as they're doing something, you're fine - but for the best performance and driveability you want them as close together as possible.

Of course you'll want them to check all other sensors for fault codes.

You might go ahead and have a fuel injector/rail pressurized flush done while you're at it. Do your service records indicate that this has been done in the past?

Welcome to NICO!

Welcome to NICO!

RE: #1

It's probably the connectors on your MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor). Have the dealer clean the connectors and then lube them up with electric grease. This should take care of your problem. If not, you should have them "ohm" the injectors to test for any that are out of the standard resistance range.

RE: #3

You can order the lights from Joe @ Everything Infiniti (one of our sponsors). He'll give you a great price. As far as replacing them, it's as simple as removing the dash, replacing the bulbs and putting the dash back on. It can be a pain, but I'm mechanically retarded and have done it before. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish. Here's an article on how to remove the dash: zerothread?id=28201

If you haven't already, start searching Ebay for a Factory Service Manual (FSM) for a 1994 Infiniti Q45. Do not buy the ones on CD, they're fakes. It should cost you anywhere from 10-60 dollars, depending on the deals out there.

I don't know that I would have the dealer do a Consult if you're not throwing any codes. I would just have them fix problem 1 and diagnose problem 2. Just my .02.

Good luck,

Nick

P.S. We need pics

Power balance whould be within 12 rpm at (I think) 800 rpm.

Do a search and see what Q45tech has posted.

Could it be Linda? I've taken my Infinitis there for 4 plus years, and they always do a great job. For some things I go accross the street to Price Brothers (just South of the KFC), as they are a really good independant shop, and charge a bit less. Since I bought my Q with a warranty I usually stick with the Infinity dealer as I don't pay the full price.
