My J30 stalled today after coming to a redlight. I've got appproximately 188k miles on it. I noticed my HICAS light had just recently started coming on this week and I don't know if that had anything to do with it because i hadn't noticed any difference in the way it was driving. I've been trying to trouble shoot all day to no avail. I had my fuel pump replaced two maybe three years ago. I would appreciate any suggestions out there. The car will crank but won't startup. I'm beginning to smell gas. Should I change the plugs. I'm lost and confused.

can you tell if youre getting spark? pull the plugs and see if theyre gas soaked...
could be a bad MAF....
could be bad gas...I had that two years ago....just died at a light, had to get towed...started next day...but kept stalling...until it died again.....not until I added more fresh gas did it run right...

I cleaned the MAF and it started up for a brief moment and then shutoff. I also checked the spark plugs. They weren't flooded but with some pretty good corrosion so I replaced those and so I'm back where I started. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the fuel pump has gone bad again. Any suggestions?

You should be able to hear the fuel pump humming if you listen over the rear speakers when the key is in the start position. Or disconnect the fuel line on the top engine passenger side when cranking to see if you have fuel pressure.
I still think it's a bad MAF which needs replacing.

Okay will check those things first thing tomorrow. Would you recommend getting a MAF from the junk yard?

I checked my fuel pressure and I also don't hear any humming coming from the rear fuel pump in the back after turning on the ignition. ???

Did you have fuel pressure? You said you checked it, but didn't say whether it showed any...

I disconnected the fuel line and I got no pressure as well. I also did a self diagnostic and got a code 55(no malfunction). Could that be because i disconnected the battery while changing the plugs. Anyway, still at a loss. ???

When you disconnected the fuel line, did you try to crank it to start?

That was replaced back in 2011 so yes you're right it does look like I'm gonna be replacing a fuel pump. Can you suggest any links on this repair since I might tackle this one myself?

you will need to replace O ring...and I would replace the FPCU (Fuel Pump Control unit) as well.
rockauto.com usually has good prices on clearance J30 items.
Do you have the FSM?

Before you take the fuel pump out....

the fuel pump runs for about five seconds when you first turn the key to the on position.....have someone put the key to on...while you are listening with an open trunk with an ear next to the gas tank, or near the gas filler neck with the gas cap on...

check to see if youre getting voltage to the fuel pump...there are two wire clips attached to the top of the fuel pump lid...get a voltmeter and check for voltage when key is turned to on position for first five seconds...

It might be a fuel pump relay located under the front hood, or the fpcu, located to the right of the fuel tank in the trunk

It was the fuel pump. After i installed it, she started right up. However I do have another issue. After cleaning the MAP Sensor, and replacing the plugs and of course the fuel pump and fuel filter, the car seems to be idling a little rough. My acceleration is slow and rough. Is there something I should recheck or revisit?

I replaced the MAP Sensor and that got rid of the rough idle significantly, but I still detect a little hesitation at initial acceleration. When I get up to speed it's okay but I don't dare try to beat a traffic light. Is there something else I need to check or possibly clogged?

okay i cleaned the throttle bodies and took it for a test drive and unfortunately i'm still getting the hesitation. Although like yesterday, the longer I drove the car it would eventually smooth out and regain its power and acceleration. I'm at a loss.

so, are you saying when the car is cold, or not up to operating temperature the car hesitates? But when it warms up, the car is fine?

Yes I found that to be the case today as I was driving back from the auto parts store, the car started to regain its acceleration. There was still some hesitation, but it got considerably better the longer I drove.

give it a few days of driving, I remember reading somewhere that the MAF teaches the computer where to be in regards to air intake, fuel injection and such...when changing it, it needs to relearn it....let me know how it does by Sunday.

Its still doing the same thing. Idling rough, poor acceration. But its not consistent. I changed out both Pcv valves this am. They were pretty well clogged and I test drove it and it drove really well, until I drove it again an hour later and the symptoms returned. ???

I took your advice and cleaned the MAF Connectors as well the IAC Valve and I also changed out the coolant temperature sensor and after test driving it's still running sluggish with poor acceleration.

So just to recap: I changed out the fuel pump, fuel filter, Replaced MAF Sensor, Cleaned Maf connectors as well throttle bodies and replaced the coolant temperature sensor. I'm stuck
