Did a search on this but came up empty handed. What is the recommended grade of rear end oil for the 97 J30, and the capacity? Thanks, Danny

Get some 75W-90. But 2 one liters containers. I used Valvoline Synpower/Durablen...can't remember which one. I believe Valvoline rebranded it from one to the other after I did it.

Mobil 1 is also available. Synthetic new every 12k - 24K depending on how you drive and operating environment. Now differential cooler, and not much fluid capacity.

The MOBIL1 GL-5, (which is a 75-90 I believe), eiethr way if it is GL-5 ist the rigth MOBIL1.I also trust valvolineDurablend GL-5.I agree with maxnix on frequent exchanges but those intervals seem a bit tight.Every 30,000 miles would be ok in my book.

As for capacity Fill it up until the fluid is level with the upper fill hole.In a Q thats approx 1.5L, I am not sure what it is in a J.Your owners manual should ahve that info.

Fred...:)

Q45tech standards, don't you know. I think 30K is reasonable in non-mountainous, non-searing heat summer environments with mostly highway driving.

One thing my technician noticed was the magnetic plug was at the bottom drain hole of the differential instead of the top. He switched them on the premise one could inspect the magnet for metal accumulation without draining the differential. As the fluid is splashed everywhere while operating, this makes a lot of sense.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

Wouldn't all the heavier metal sink to the bottom of the diff?

But most of the filaments are light enough to be sloshed around anyway......

I used Valvoline synpower GL5 on mine..... Took 1.5 liters........ Just keep putting it in until it starts coming out......

Also <something i didnt do> make sure you drive it first to get the old fluid hot....
