I had a racing clutch in my last car and I don't do the 1/4 mile very often.I went to the track for the first time with the Z to see what she would do and I think I burned up the clutch or seriously took some life off of it.

I dumped the clutch at around 5 or 6K rpm and kept going thru the gears. At first I thought the tires were just spinning b/c I was taching it out and not really moving then I realized I was just burning up the clutch. It smelled horrible.

So I'm thinking about investing in a racing clutch even though I've never felt it slip on the highway and it just turned 26K miles. Has anyone switched out the clutch for a performance clutch? Any recommendations? Or is the stock clutch good and I'm just a moron at driving and shouldn't dump it? or do I need to adjust it? Any info is appreciated here.

the stock clutch in mine had some good grip.... but when i got my new transmission put in (had the grinding problem and got a new 0 mile trans for $50) i had them throw in the ACT street disc clutch and i love it.

THe stock clutch is actually quite strong....mine never had a problem with 7 track events, some modifications (see below) and 50k miles on it. A friend of mine used the stock peice with a supercharger with no problems as well...sounds like one of a few things might be happening:

-You need to learn to launch better without tappering the clutch and burning it.

-you may be feeling the dual-mass flywheel effect obgging a bit...I broke my springs after my 4th track event *shrug*

I just put in a Z1 clutch and flyhweel combo..pretty nice except the clutch itself was very tight and made the pedal too low (fixed now), and it's easy to burn and doesnt slip in traffic very well :/ However the added response and feel for track use was great....be wanred on the flywheel thing - you'll start hearing more gear noise.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think my launch had a lot to do with it. I was about to run again but I didn't want to try without test driving it on the street. It seemed fine afterwards so I'll probably go back to the track and try to fine tune my launch.

The Nissan clutch plates are made by Exedy, if you pick up the Nismo clutch disk then its basicly buying the middle quality Exedy clutch disk, pardon my spelling, I have been drinking. Also, depending on the production date, Nissan put in what they called a self adjusting clutch plate which adjusted to the way someone dumped, or, slipped the clutch.
