Recently, since our extremely cold weather (topped out at 5 above 0 today) I've been getting a high-pitched squealing from the engine of my J30. It typically lasts for a couple of minutes until the engine warms a little, but before the gauge moves. Does this mean its time to change belts or could it be something else?

I'm less than a month into my '94 J30. I had seen it for awhile and after I drove it I was hooked. This site is phenomenal! The amount of detailed information here is ridiculous.

It's possible that the belts are hardened from wear - or you could have idler pullies seizing. Both problems tend to show up more in cold temperatures.

Is it a "chirping" or "squealing" noise, or more of a whine? How many miles on your J?

It is a chirping, but its so fast it almost sounds like a squeal. Mileage is 138K.

While I'm here, anybody have any mechanic suggestions in Des Moines? I know there are a few people from the IA out there.

Oh yea, Go Panthers! I lived in Charlotte in '96 when they made the playoffs. It'll be great for the area if they pull it off. Thanks Q!

Could be an idler pulley?

I noticed probably the exact same squeal from my J when I started it this evening. Mine was more of an intermitent chirp. Sounds like the idler pulley to me. Mine was replaced about 40K ago. Not too concerned about it. My J, however, is a salt encrusted mess.

After having spent much of my life in western Canada, I find there is entirely too much paranoia about snow. When the temps get below 10F just leave the shiet alone. Salt just makes things worse. Slop and crap everywhere. I swear my town sees .5 inch of snow and puts down 3 inches of salt to deal with it. My wheel wells are solid ice with just enough clearance due to the tires wearing off the crud because of the damn salt/slush mix. To the hand car wash post haste!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if this helps, When I briefly worked in Cedar Rapids, IA I had some regular servicing done by Miller Nissan. Found it to be a good experience. I know there is a Jordan Infiniti somewhere in Iowa.

Cedar Rapids is a hike, and you're right, Jordan Infiniti is in Des Moines, but I was hoping to find a good mechanic without going to the dealer. That may be my best option, though.
