New to the forum so I wanted to introduced myself. I have recently acquired a 84 720 4x4 King Cab that has been in my family since it was almost new. It has made its rounds among the many family members and now it comes back to me. It has been sitting for awhile (in TN), but a relative just cranked it up for me and it did so without fail (a nod to those that call these trucks bullet proof).
I learned to drive a manual with this truck back in high school (late 1980s) and have some fond memories (4 wheelin, gettin some air, & went on a few dates in it, etc). The truck was my Dad's but my brother and I drove it when we could...and it survived both of us (another nod to the bullet proofness). Now it comes back to me and my 16 year old daughter will drive it. It'll be my truck that my kids get to drive, but it will also make the Home Depot trips and haul the dirt bikes when we ride. It's kinda neat that my kids get to drive the same truck I did back in the day.
I know it needs a new battery. But since I am relying on someone else to tell me about the condition of the truck (I'm in SC), I'm not sure what it's true condition really is. Once I get it back to my driveway, I plan on going through the hoses, belts and getting new tires. But since I'm getting this truck for free, I will not complain at all.
Keeping in mind the truck has been sitting for about a year or so, what are the gotchas for making the 5 hour trip from TN to SC? I'll definitely check the hoses for soft spots/leaks (and take duct tape just in case); check the dry rot on the tires, belts, etc. I'd like to avoid having it shipped from TN if I can. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
