On my 1997 Pathfinder I’ve noticed the rear passenger window on the driver side doesn’t respond to the master switch sometimes. Or it will bring the window up or down then doesn’t work when I press it again.

After the master switch button stops working I press the button on the passenger door and it always works. After pressing the button on the passenger door the button on the master switch starts working right away.

Older Nissan systems are all set up so the rear window "slave" switches get power from their own door harness but ground through the "default" switch throw in the master. So if it works reliably from the slave switch, it means the problem isn't wiring and you almost certainly have a bad contact in the master switch.

Alright, I'll look into a new one then.

Thanks

So after checking this again. The window was not operating again with the master switch. I go to the driver side passenger door and push the button twice before it started responding. Then the master switch responded after that.

Is this something to do with the motor itself rather than the master switch?

It could be balky brushes in the motor, but I'd expect it to be misbehaving with both switches if that was the case. There are three throws inside the master that basically all need to be healthy for the window to operate correctly, and erratic behavior like that is generally from bad contacts in one or more of them. They're slide contacts in the older masters and they simply wear out.

Thanks for the help.

I’ll try a switch first before changing the window motor.

But what I wanted to point out is that after the master switch didn’t work, it took 2-3 presses of the switch on the passenger door itself before the window started working and this is what usually gets the master switch going again. So I guess you can take that as the other switch misbehaving as well?

The slave switch still has to get its ground through the "default" throw in the master. If that contact is dicey, it will affect both switches.
