I just looked in the FSM. it says to replace the timing belt every 60,000 miles.a timing belt is cheaper replacement than a whole motor.
I thought the majority of z31 owners worked on the cars themselves. I cant imagine the cost of a dealer doing the timing belt service. It took me a weekend of working on it about 4 hours a day to do it the first time. I'm sure I could do it in under 2 hour the next time. to each their own i guess.
