so i have a major leak from my intake manifold gasket ( intake manifold to head)

questions:

1.how hard is it to chage this gasket?

2.do i have to remove my fuel rail ( it was a bit*h installing my top feed and getting it lined up correctly)

3.ive seen the upper intake manifold gasket, but is there a lower intake manifold gasket as well? (connects upper to lower half of the manifold)

4. how hard is it remove all the emmision b.s?

5. is it hard to polish my intake manifold?

thanks for any answers

What engine??????

1) Simple just maticulous.2)Not sure, but if you installed a top feed fuel rail i'm sure an intake gasket won't be tough.3)Yes4)Easy as long as it goes back on, removing it for good would set a plethora of check engine lights usually5)Not with a good dremel. You mean the exterior right? not the runners....

I have never done just the intake manifold gasket, but replacing the headgasket/exhaust gasket/intake manifold gaskets all at once is easy as hell

if you have a KA i have done it on one and it wasnt easy for me. just time consuming and you have to get your hands in small places. might be easier to just take the head off and do it on a bench. i dont know about taking the emissions off. but if you figure it out do a write up on it cause im curious too. lol and polishing the intake.... a lot of roughness on it. just smooth it down and get a good polishing kit and go to town. lol it will probably take a good number of hours.

All of the above is easy. Yes there's a lower gasket. Just get an intake mani gasket set. I think that includes upper, lower, and TB gaskets. NY won't take emissions removal lightly tho on an OBDII vehicle...you may need to register your car in another state, or pull some strings. The only things you really need to remove emissions are an egr block-off plate and some gasket material you can cut to shape/size and some vacuum line plugs. If you plan to remove ALL vacuum based emissions equipment then yo may as well just get rid of all the hard lines behind the engine and on the mani. Make sure ALL vacuum ports off the mani and intake are plugged or you car will run like poop. I'd keep the IACV and the Blow-by tube...so you'll have 2 ports on the intake piping instead of 3 I think. And yes to remove the mani you need to unhook and move the fuel rail out of the way. Also, are you talking about polishing the inside or outside. I've done both. Polishing the inside is a PITA. I port matched the intake runners to the head first with a dremel, then I took a really hard circular wire brush on a long rod to the inside of the runners to scrape off all the gunk inside and also I was hoping to gain some minor volume increases in each runner...but I can only hope, I don't know if it did much for the volume. Then took some sand paper and sanded the whole inside of the runners and gradually used a less coarse grit. I only used 3 different grits tho, I don't remember what numbers. I then took some compressed air and blew all the shavings out, then used TB cleaner and a rag to get out anything lingering. Next I saturated a rag with aluminum polish, put it thru the each runner, grabbed each end and pulled it back and forth aggressively to polish the inside. I used similar technique with the plenum cleanup and polish. I sanded the outside a little with some coarse sandpaper then used 2 lighter grits...then polished. I could have spent more time on the outside, but I plan on painting it black so I figured I wouldn't sweat over it.GL with your manifold. Hope this helped out.

Oh by the way if you don't already have a bunch of wrench adapters/joints, go to sears or some place that sells tools and buy a variety set of adapters/joints and some extensions. With the proper adapters, joints, and extensions I've gotten the manifold down to a science and can remove that mofo in about 8 min and install it in like 10.

I didnt read Ken's post (because of lack of spacing haha) but on a SR (not sure if KA is the same)...

Take off that bracket holding the manifold up. I tried putting the manifold back on with bracket still attached and it sucked major ***.

The runners wouldn't sit down right and I had major boost leak from it.

I ended up having to take the manifold back off then loosening the bracket so I could move it around as I put the mani back on.

yea its a ka24de.

so form what you ppl say its doesnt seem to bad just time consuming.

now i need to get the gasket.

do you think its worth it to port the intake?

also does any one have a good way of capping off the vac. lines for the emmisions, i have the egr off already, so i need to take care of the vac line there, also i have other emmision lines that are disconnected but i need a good way to cap them off b.c the screw in the vac. line method doesnt work, it leaks.

thnaks

Porting the intake is virtually worthless without porting the head also. And it's better to leave a rough surface on the inside of the runner. More turbulence in the air charge creates a better mixture when fuel is injected. Getting into OBD II emissions is a can of worms I don't ever want to open. If it was a track car, no big deal, but as a street car it'll be a nightmare. Unless you know someone who will slap a sticker on it, it'll be tough.

On that note, is anyone else having to switch to an electronic database for inspections? No more stickers in NC soon, just a database saying you hgave been inspected.

It's not going to be worth it to port the intake. If you're serious about making loads of power with forced induction, fabricate your own intake mani....tons of people do, it's really not too bad.Oh and the vacuum tubing....like I said just remove all the hard lines. Anything left that's a vacuum port use a vacuum cap, you can get them at a parts store. Get a variety pack. Or you could do something like get black silicone, or epoxy...those will be a little more set in stone.Watch out for the throttle body vacuum ports, make sure they are ALL plugged. There's one that likes to evade detection.

i know i have a big leak comming form the egr vac souce, so i have to seal that one, and some other emmission crap.

silcone works well? will it blow out under boost? the vac. caps dont work they blow out soon as i hit boost.

i need to find a good way to seal off the vac hoses..

LoL that's cute. I'd sit there and rev the piss out of the engine just to watch the little fvckers fly off hehehe.

Anyway, epoxy is your friend. That should hold under boost. I've done the intake manifold up inside with epoxy to fill the holes where the butterflies were and it holds under boost on a buddy's s13.
