An engine needs fuel, air, compression and spark in order to work. If a particular cylinder is not getting one of those, then it won't work. You could check compression with a tester, and see if it is in spec. You could also check the resistance across your injector to see if it is working properly and delivering fuel. My plugs were pretty bad when I pulled them out. It could also be the wires. Since it is only 1 cylinder that isnt firing, it seems doubtful that it is a timing problem. You seem to have limited experience with cars, so the easiest thing to do would get new spark plugs and wires and change them yourself. If you haven't done this in a while, it is a good idea to do anyways. I try and change those things every spring. Other than that, you are probably better off taking it to a mechanic you can trust to get it fixed, or bribing a friend to come and help you.
