[VIDEO HowTo] Infiniti V8 P0340 & P0335. Camshaft and Crankshaft Position Sensor Codes

Postby EdBwoy » Wed Jul 26, 2017 12:41 am

The common starting issues, stumbling, sluggish, stalling or dying issues sometimes when warmed up.
[Please get your codes read and present them so we can accurately and effectively diagnose the issue]

This guide should be valid for all Nissans that used the VK45DE V8 engine.
  • 2003-2010 M45
  • 2002-2006 Q45
  • 2003-2008 FX45
And here are the part numbers for the sensor that will address P0340 or P0335:
(The OEM Nissan sensor is the preferred replacement, according to user feedback.)
  • Nissan part # 237314M50B
  • Autozone # SU5745
  • OReilly's # 23731-4M505, 23731-4M506
  • Advanced Auto Parts # 180-0397, CPS0001
The v8 has its cam sensor at the front of the engine. Although I correctly identified the one you are looking for, I erroneously mixed some sensor names in my first post. Below you will find the correct terminology from the FSM.

Here's a picture from my 06 M45 engine replacement. I hope it helps illustrate where things are.
1. Intake valve timing control position sensor
2. Intake valve timing control solenoid valve
3. Camshaft position sensor (PHASE)
Image

These 2 are from my 2003 M45, but the timing cover layout is the same for the 2 generations. Note the green insert that is on the y34 harness.

I see these threads pop up often enough that I wanted to make a video when I got a chance. While doing my jackstand alignment yesterday, I saw a good opportunity to do just that.

My wife's car is showing code P0340. I bought the sensor and replaced it as shown in your diagram #3. I reset the ECU using my obd2 reader. Drove around and the code popped up again. What else can I do to fix this problem. The car has died on us once and we had all my kids in the car. It was not a good feeling. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeffrey

Yeah, couldn't be more explicit. Maybe I should add that it's usually advisable to use the oem sensors.

True Costee. I prefer to keep an OEM spare in my car. Sometimes it's easier to get an aftermarket one to limp along, although I've had good results with Autozone sensors as have others here.

Jhuerto, where did you get your replacement sensor? What I would do is swap that sensor with the one located under the car to see if the car still starts. If you get a crankshaft sensor code instead of the camshaft one, then you know the sensor is bad.
*clean the contact surfaces before installation and secure the harnesses (the plug will click when fully seated)
** be careful not to drop the sensors

I bought it new from Amazon and it was an OEM part. I went ahead bought another one to replace the other one that's near the transmission. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I will send an update next Tuesday.

Looking forward to an update on your findings.

To be clear, I meant that I would take the new sensor you put at #3 and install it under the car. Then take the one under the car & put it at #3.

The one under the car typically does not have anything to do with p0340, and my suggestion was for troubleshooting purposes.

Thanks for clearing it up but I went ahead and ordered another one. Hoping it will fix the problem. I will update once I get the part installed.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

So I am getting a P0335 (2006 M45), I already did the cam position sensors (#1) so I assume its the crankshaft sensor. From the reading its underneath the car, any pics or a diagram? (travelling so I dont have the FSM installed). Thank you.

Think I found it - rear passenger side above the oil pan, that right?

Yep! P0335 is the crankshaft sensor. Not sure if you've got a chance to watch the video, but you got it, it's the only sensor at the bottom of the engine - where the transmission meets the oil pan, pass side.

Side note: there is only one camshaft position sensor. It's at #3

Guess I am changing in the parking garage at work when I get done travelling...sigh. I assume you need to drop the belly pan to get to it?

re:cps sensors, i replaced both #1's in the image. Nissan really makes things needlessly complicated with their terminology.

And the #3 sensor is interchangeable with the crank sensor?

Correct

Maybe just the small rear one if you still have it. I can't confirm right now because I've been staring at the undersides of too many vehicles recently and the individual layouts can get a little confusing.
Jack the front right wheel to see if yours is exposed. You could probably see it just by lying on the ground and peeking behind the wheel.

Just wanted to say thank you - replaced the crank sensor and the M45 is back in business.

Welp - it threw a new P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor). I assume it wants the sensor in position 3?

I haven't but were you able to get a replacement through Infiniti's 1-year warranty on OEM parts?
