Thief locks himself in car

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A suspected car thief never realized that sometimes getting in is a lot easier than getting out.

David Christopher Lander, 51, was arrested during the early morning of July 18 after he got locked inside the 1994 Infiniti he was trying to steal, according to Alachua County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Keith Faulk.

The car has a security device that automatically locks the doors when the car alarm is triggered. A button on the driver's side door could have released the locks, but Lander apparently hadn't done his homework.

When police arrived, they found Lander scrunched down in the back seat. Police found coins from the car, along with a pendant worth $50, in Lander's pockets at the time, Faulk said. Lander was charged with one count each of burglary and theft.

Had he just emptied his pockets, he probably would have been charged with only tresspass.... or at least would have pleaded down to that.

Now he'll get more time than Ken Lay.

You would think he could have kicked his way out. I am glad he got caught.
