Hi everyone!! I am having a problem starting my 91 Q45 has been running good till now. I had to jiggle the key in the ignition to get it to make a good contact then it would start. It no longer will respond to this approach. All ignition functions will perform. Up to ACC. when I go to start. I get a very faint click on the right side of the dash. I changed the relay; but that didn't work. I thought I may need a new ignition switch. or I read in my owners manuel of a ECU. Anyone have any Ideal??

Which relay did you replace, the blue starter relay under the hood near the wiper motor? If not that's the next place I'd check. Given your jiggle-the-key and it would start method, I'd say it's a good chance it's the ignition switch. You can check the switch with a multi-meter to make sure though... The switch has big exposed solder joints on the back of the cylinder that you can trace out to see if it's making contact. Do you have the FSM (factory service manual) to get the color codes?

How many miles on your Q?

Thank you Heath,

I did suspect that it is my ignition switch, the jiggle method did work for a while. Do I go to a dealer or is it something I can change myself? Yes I have the FSM that came with the car. Its seems all test are diagnostic.

Thank you for being there. Respectfully Joe

The switch isn't that difficult to replace. The hardest part is drilling out the bolts that hold it in place, but they're fairly soft. They use sheer head bolts as an anti-theft measure, so you don't have a head for your wrench. Otherwise it's just unplug the old one and plug the new one back in it's place. You'll have to remove the covers for the steering column, etc.

I don't think so... just be sure you have the battery disconnected, and don't mess with any wiring harnesses wrapped in yellow tape!
