I have a 99 I30 with 250,000 miles and the automatic transmission is going strong. I believe the transmission will last until at least 310,000 miles or more.
However, when I first bought it a couple of months ago, the transmission fluid had not been changed in a while.. The fluid was dark and way over due for a change. The transmission had a strange shuttering feel after it shifted. I thought -- well here come the transmission troubles.
So I did some research and found some years Nissan (et al) and Castrol participated in developing an ATF spec named JASO M315-1998, now called JASO-1A for antishudder durability for comfortable gear changes without noise, vibration or harshness. I do know that Mobil1 and Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF meet or exceed the JASO-1A spec.
So I changed the automatic transmission fluid to Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF and the problems cleared up and today is shifts perfectly. It is no secret that keeping ATF changed is a good investment for a long running transmission. I like to change the ATF every 15,000 miles or once a year. I can get Cartrol IMV for $4.49 a quart. ATF changes for an I30 or Maxima is a relativey easy DIY operation that I do my driveway.
