When the light comes on, you have only a few miles until you run out of fuel. This is why the Trabant is so light; you can simply pick it up and carry it to the next petrol station.
A car designed and first build in communist Russia controlled East Germany during the late 1950's light enough to pick up and carry to the next gas station? 820 kg..... alrighty, then. To go along with having no fuel gauge for it's 22HP 2 cycle engine, the Trabant also had no oil filter, no oil pump, no radiator, no heater or AC, and no fuel pump since the engine was gravity fed. I remember an article online a while ago about thoughts to export/build it in Africa.
Alas, let's not relish on automotive shortcomings of the distant past.....The Versa is a modern car that comes complete with a fuel gauge, a low fuel warning light, and also has an OBDII port to plug in a ScanGauge II which has the capability to display DTE.
If the OP wants one, so be it.
