Let's play a little game, where were you 10 years ago when this thread was still on its first page, vs where are you today?

I was in the tear down phase of the race car build up, my wife was just starting graduate school, and we lived in the city.

Now, I'm building a different race car, my wife is long done with school, we have 2 kids, and we live in the boonies.

I also daily an ethanol fueled, AWD, rally inspired car. Except mine is a wagon, and the pistons go side to side instead of up and down.

10 years ago I was in Tucson going to college, being a dumb 20 year old and making poor life decisions.

Today, I'm a dad and have an 11 month old boy, Theodore. Working as a maintenance mechanic fixing the automated sorting equipment at USPS, making almost triple what I made as a Firefighter.

Also, f*** it's been a long time since I've been on here.

Meh.

I've played with DSMs, EVOs, Nissan's, Hondas, Chevy's, and Subarus. They all break, and all have their strengths and weaknesses. The WRX is just new DSM, it's essentially the cheapest turbo car you can buy right now, it has AWD, and they sold lots of them. That's a recipe for lots of blowed up engines and gearboxes.

I still smile every time I spin all 4 tires through first gear on dry tar, and I'll keep going full send on my bone stock trans and diff. All in a car I built for about 1/2 of what a decent bone stock EVO would cost.

Oh I know. I did a build on a BR350 Limited EVO IX, and I know how much the owner paid for the car with a windowed short block. It had the leather recaros removed and it was still worth more than everything I have into my car and then some.

Was 500ish at the wheels on corn when I was done though, it was a neat car, and pretty quick too. He got bored of it though, so he sold it and bought a 14 WRX to throw money at.

Mine is the ix MR”SE” or “2006.5”

Came with the Recaros that have the red stitching, front air dam, rear spoiler lip, brake air guides.... basically a hybrid SE edition and MR edition that they made as a send off or tribute to the 4G63. Still has an ‘06 VIN but was essentially at 2007 model year. No one apparently knows the real number produced, but in my color we know for sure less than 300... there may even be less than 300 in all colors for the trim level.

Yep, those are tough to come by. This was also an SE, but was something like No. 22 of 26 BR350s built. When he was done with it I think someone paid upwards of 30K for what at the time was a very capable, but very "well used" 10 year old mitsubishi. It was a potent track weapon no doubt, but we killed a lot of the streetability to do it, and I think thats why he let it go. The GR WRX we built to replace it is a lot more daily friendly, but will still embarrass a Hellcat on the streets or a road course.

Yeah, in the grand scheme of Evo’s... this one is mild. Intake, exhaust, LICP, COP, throttle body, fuel pump, injectors, Ethanol.... and a QuarterMaster Twin.

10 years ago I was pretty fresh out of college, working like 80 hours per week trying to keep the auto industry semi-profitable.
This week I only worked like 70 hours, trying to do the same thing.
...except now I have a corvette.

10 years ago my KA-T had still been blown up for 2 years and that is still where it sits now in storage...patiently waiting. I was with my longtime high school sweetheart but that fell apart. Left the hotel industry and went to work for Harley Davidson for 5 years. Learned a lot about the industry and myself as i started washing bikes and moved my way up from there to service writer, assistant service manager, sales rep and then sales manager. I quit there in 2016 and decided that i wanted to go back to school.

i got a job at walgreens in the pharmacy where i currently work while attending nursing school. I'm in my 3rd semester out of 4. I will be graduating in the spring and trying to get a job as an emergency room nurse by the end of next summer. At that point the S14 will come out of storage and i will finally begin my build, lol. I'm sad that i missed out on a lot of the car industry and not really in touch with most of you anymore but life happens. I've been with the same girl now for the past 8 years and we're pretty set, she's also a nurse. We plan on moving to Arizona in a year or two after i finish my bachelors and have some experience. I'm so over winter and being trapped in my house for more than half the year. I'll be so excited to see cars with no rust that i can buy to add to my collection.

Besides the S14 that is in storage, I currently have a 2000 dodge dakota, 2000 mitsubishi eclipse, 2005 sentra ser spec v, 13 Harley sportster,14 bmw s1000rr. Just biding my time until i make real money and am able to move, buy a house and enjoy life in the warmth.

I’ve been trying to get out to the valley, as well. For better or for worse, I’m in the process of getting on with a buddy on a startup distribution company and that will likely keep me in CO for the next 10 years or so....

That sounds plausible.

10 years ago I was... doing the same job, but not self employed yet. My 2nd kid wasn't born yet. Was still married to my ex. (shudders). 240 hadn't been smashed by an old lady while it was parked in the street.

10 Years ago I was getting ready filling out like 30 different pages of forms for a security clearance for a build at the old bus company.

I was 30 pounds lighter and had more hair. And a lot more stress in life.

Really? No one has posted in a week?

My clutch is slipping....

Should I:

1) Use the same twin disk setup I have and pay $3k?

2) Actually fix my s*** to run a “normal” clutch with a fork on it and whatnot like a normal person and get an ACT 4 puck sprung and pay like $5k?

Discuss...

Why are clutches so expensive?
You could buy a whole car for that, and beat the living f*** out of it.

Option 2 that costs $5k includes a new bellhousing so that I can go back to using a clutch fork again... and some little upgrades while the trans is apart...

Keep the twin.

The streetability is just better vs a single with the same power holding capacity. The only downside is the "neutral rattle". But even the Hyper Single on my current build rattles, so....

Also, remember, most of the twin disks are rebuild able. You can buy frictions and steels for a fraction of the cost of a whole new clutch. Then you just need the pressure plate/flywheel surfaced.

See... this is where it gets interesting, though. My twin lasted 30k... I’m sure you know, as it wears the cover plate moves closer to the release bearing. Well the clutch was still holding fine, but it toasted the bearing. Went ahead and did a rebuild, replaced the bearing... and only got 2k out of it before it started slipping. Now I just want to start from scratch.
