how does it have a cold air intake already when it has a box covering the filter?

Take the filter out and you will see it draws the air in through the wheel well.

ok but is there a way to make a bigger hole or get more air flow to the engine?

If that happens you will have to modify the ecu, Maf and get larger injectors. You have to remember the engineers that designed this motor knew EXACTLY how to get the most out of it and retain reliability.

You already have enough air flow with the OEM setup. Why do people want to waste money putting in an "improvement" that really does nothing, and in some cases even makes things worse. Studies have shown that oiled filters let in more dust than paper filters, so you are cutting the longevity of your engine. Plus you have the hassle of cleaning and reoiling the filter, how much easier to just open the air box. take the dirty paper filter out and throw it away, and stick another one in. For the cost of a K&N cone filter and adapter you could pay for all the paper filters you would probably ever use. Plus the K&N cleaning/oiling kit cost as much or more than a paper filter, especially if you wait to buy them on sale.

Consumers reports did a study and covered half the surface of a paper filter with duct tape and their engineers said there was still enough air flow with just half the area.

Forgot to add, if you want the K&N cone filter (deluxe dual cone chrome plated model) and adapter I took off my 94 J30T you can have it for $5 if you pick it up at my house in Orange County, California.

before installing my popcharger i used a 4in hole saw and a drill so i could pipe it underneath the engine compartment...it currently sits behind my drivers side blinker...ive been meaning to fab my own splashguard but with a newborn its hard to get time for yourself...plus since it hasnt been raingin much here in TX as we are experiencing a drought i havent been in a hurry to get it done either...

why wont a round air filter attached to the maf sensor be better then a drop in filter? the drop in filter is blocked by a box and only gets air from a small hole with a round filter it can get all the air it needs right?

Because on a hot day after your engine gets hot the air in the engine compartment can get very hot. Thats why the OEM setup draws its air through a duct leading outside the engine compartment. And you already have more than enough air. Do you think you know more than the engineers who designed the car? Those companies selling aftermarket air filters are just sucking you in and want to make money off suckers. Hot air is less dense than cold air. You are actually defeating your purpose and are actually sucking in less air molecules and your compression ratio will go down. I guess a benefit would be you could run your car on lower octane gas since your compression ratio and horse power would be down on a hot day. Besides, did you ever take a look at the throttle plate? It restricts the air passageway way lower than the diameter of the MAF sensor, except maybe at full open. So its the throttle plate that actually determines how much air goes into your engine. The only time you might need a bigger air filter is if you had a turbo or supercharger setup.

yea ur right but im gonna add a catless exhaust system to the car will that bring my rpms up and will i be able to use a round air filter then to the maf sensor?

Pardon me, but could someone post a pic of this?? Whereas I've been quiet about this thread, I've been wondering the same thing.

If the OEM intake is closely related to a CAI, then that's pretty cool. That way, I won't have to tack on a cone filter or cut holes to feed a custom line through the fenders & stuff. All I'd have to worry about is the exhaust.
