well I drove my car last night about 20mins home from my BFs house, fresh with the oil treatment and RP oil...... the Mobile I had removed was 10-W30 and other than dirty was in good shape.

went to work today and on the drive heard what sounded like a DUCK QUACKING in my engine bay. I hooped out fearing that I had an oil leak or something and that what I heard was bad. I get out check under the car and everything looks good. I go against my better judgement and fire her back up....... sure enough there is a Quacking sound(if you ever heard somemthing that was water starved trying to suck water..... that is more the sound. like a pool cleaner) but only at one point in the engine cycles and in rythem every 8-10 secs. it does increase in repeatitiveness as the RPMs increase....... but audiable level never increases. oddly enough though it is loud AS HELL.

I was able to make to work and I even limped it home......... it doesnt seem to have effected ANYTHING at all and if it didnt sound so horrible, then I wouldnt even be making this post. My coolant levels are perfect and my temp gauge never reads more than 180*s.....

any thoughts as to where to start? We wanted to use a stethiscope(sp?) but the sound is so loud that it is near impossible to diagnose with a long screw driver...... any better ways to hunt down my problem sound?

Ive though maybe the water pump, but neither temp gauge has suggested anything temp was is out of the ordinary. my BFs brother brings the gloom and doom with every word he speaks and starts claiming it is a crank bearing(which I would think would effect the engines output atleast and likely would never had made it to my work.... let alone home). My BF is thinking it is a pulley/tensioner.....or maybe a bearing within one of them.

any thoughts?

I have heard that sound come out of my water pump, right before the bearing failed..

It was very loud for a day or two then water started leaking out of the pinhole at the bottom of the pump...

Only other suggestion could be the timing belt tension but it would be a very long shot...

Water pump. Friends did that on his shortly before it fragged, sending shrapnel into the hood and cutting his MAF wires. Bearing must have gone out, causing a sudden seizure. You may not notice increased temps until it's too late.

That's the sound of 'baby jesus' crying...

or a tight timing belt.

I'd agree with the waterpump theory, and suggest to remove the waterpump belt for 2 minutes next time the engine is at home, and cold. If the noise still happens...it ain't the waterpump.

WELL...... now that seems to be a logical solution to diagnosing.... I should have thought of that.

guess I just was freakin a bit and didnt slow down to think...... I hope it is the w/p. I just didnt want to order one and then still be hunting down ghosts.

Sounds like the the timing belt tensioner.

For the future, you should consider getting a magnetic oil drain plug off ebay for about $15.

If you're ever concerned about your bearings, just drain your oil and check for inconsistencies in friction shavings.

Good Luck !

That sounds like a bearing noise to me. Either the alternator or the water pump would be my first guess.

Pull the belt off and see if it sound disappears. You can run the car for a couple min w/o the pump or the alty running w/o any problems.

update: thats what I get for letting it run.........

was disassembling the IC piping so that I could access the belt, I looked underneath the car and find a pool of water...... the good news is I caught it early, the bad news is that i have to drive my BFs mz6 for a few days well I wait for a WP.

Ps nearly 2 years w.o an issue...... O well, it is fun to think that the water pump that is dying right now, is the same water pump my CA came with from the factory. I guess it was bound to die eventually. 20 years for a water pump...... thats nissan engineering for ya

What's really funny is I could fix that water pump in about an hour. I actually have the seal in my truck right now and the bearing at work. Too bad you're in Florida. Fixing water pumps on pools/spas/hot tubs is what I do all day. Just about all fluid pumps that use a centrifugal impeller use the same seals, and bearings in general are just based on dimensions and loads, not specific applications.

LOL I layed in my bed and read the whole thing last night..........

ordering a WP (is the FR motorsports one any better or worse than the genuine nissan ), Greddy Timing belt(actually been oddly eager to do this ), and new thermostat to night. should be about 250 shipped to my door when all is said and done. hopefully it is here before Xmas.

PS the re-maned from autozone or advance...... what did that cost you? was there a core charge?

Buy an OEM et water pump. The warranty on the factory part comes in handy sometimes.

bought a brand new WP at advance(last one I could get ahold of w/o waiting till after xmas..... and I need to get around) with lifetime warranty for 34.99 complete with gasket.

I was suprized and even more suprized when there was no core charge.

if it works good I will post all the info on it. It was designed for an S12 so I should be good

now just trying to hammer out where to get a timing belt. Ive been quoted as much as a month for the greddy ones

Im going to email them in the AM. I called enjuku and about 6 other shops locally that i normally have no issues finding things.........

all the parts stores in town, yet no love for the CA . RawBrokeage.com was pretty helpful even though they had a bit of wait.
