Just finished installing the alarm in my D21. I also installed some aftermarket door lock actuators. I feel a little strange being able to lock and unlock the doors on my 1986 truck with a remote.

Some of you may ask, why an alarm in a POS old truck. Well, its not the truck I was worried about. I tend to keep some pretty expensive tools in my truck at times, not to mention parts, and I would really like to avoid them growing legs and wandering off on me. Broadfield was able to hook me up with a smoking deal on a Viper 350 Plus, and I couldnt pass it up.

Took me about three hours to get everything routed, and set up. Maybe I will get a video of everything working tomorrow.

How nuts am I?

Very nice! It's on my list of stuff to do on my Frontier... Not because I'm too worried about the truck, or carry expensive stuff in it. I'm just lazy, and I find that if I use a remote to lock a car, I never lock myself out! I want to add an extra wrinkle on my truck with a lock actuator on the tailgate lock. I have an older Audiovox alarm in my garage that was in my Q when I bought it, so the expense is just a couple of relays, some wire, and my time.

Old or not that is a cool mod, I would love to do that and also add power windows so i do not have to lean over to roll down passenger side. I lock not cause of the 91 truck but the monster stereo stuff I have in it.

Not at all. Older cars are easier to steal, people need parts for them, and you're trying to protect contents of vehicle. I always put security systems on my cars.

Sweet! I recently installed door-lock actuators on my mom's '09 Yaris. It took 2 relays and lots of wiring. But it's fun wiring stuff into our vehicles.

Get everything you need from Broadfield (the poster above you). Great service, better prices, and awesome fast shipping.

It took me an afternoon to install all the stuff, but I am very tech savy, so it may take others more or less time. As for quality, I use my remote every day, and its still working perfect. Still have the original batteries in them even.

Yes, the 2-way remote will notify you of alarm triggers. However, you obviously need to be within operating range for that to occur. That's where the SmartStart comes into play. It would text you that the alarm is being triggered from any distance to your smart phone. That same module would also allow you to lock/arm and unlock/disarm the Viper from any distance on your smart phone. If you buy the GPS version of the SmartStart you would even be able to track your vehicle in real time from your smart phone via Google maps.

Wow old thread. In related news, I wandered out to my truck the other day (its been behind the garage for a few months) and hit the remote and the doors unlocked. Its been sitting since mid summer lol.

Hey longtooth, you sent me a PM back in January, but you don't have "Allow users to send you private messages" set to YES. You also don't have "Users can contact me by e-mail" set to YES. So there was no way to get in contact with you until I saw your post on this thread.
