How can I clear the "service engine soon" light on my 97 Infiniti J30??

It came on while I was driving and ran out of gas, there is nothing wrong with the car.

Thanks

It thinks something is wrong and there might be. 97 is OBDII so you can just take it to Auto Zone and get them to scan it AND delete code. That way you can know what code it was (write done the P0002 or what ever the P code was) and your SES light will be out.

There is a service engine soon light on the J ? Is this the same or different as the "check engine light"?

Unplug your battery for 30 min.

It's illegal for AutoZone to delete codes.

How is it illegal?

I forget exactly why - I just remember when I was in autozone the other day buying wax for my car, some guy was arguing with the worker about not clearing his OBDII code - the worker mentioned that it is illegal for him to do so because of some law or something...I didn't really catch what he said...

If the reason for the CEL coming ON is gone, it might go OFF after a short while (this was the case with an intermittently working injector and O2 sensor on my '93 J30), but codes are stored until they are cleared.

There might be a valid reason for it staying ON, plus there might be other stored codes too, as not every code activates the CEL (on the '93 at least).

I disconnected the battery for a couple hours but the light is still on.

How does the dealer clear the light?

If the light is still on, that might mean something is actually wrong with the car. I would take it in for service.

Don't take it somewhere and have to pay someone to tell you that there is nothing wrong with it. At least go to Auto Zone first and see what the codes are FOR FREE!!!

The number one reason why the CEL comes on the J usually has to do with the 02 sensors.

If you have an OBD II reader you can. Otherwise there is no way for you to "push a button" on your car to do it.

Went to Auto Zone, they wouldn't clear the code. Told me it was the code for "throttle position sensor" which obivously went on when I ran out of gas like I stated in my original post. I guess I just have to continue to look at the service engine soon light

I'm not sure about any real connection between running out of gas and a CEL induced code for a TPS related issue. Could be just two random, non-correlated events.

The fully warmed up engine idle is normal, the transmission still shifts normally and gas mileage hasn't suffered?

Yes idle is normal, transmission shifts normally and I have not noticed any difference in gas mileage. I have been getting 265 miles for every full tank of gas, no highway driving.

How many gallons is normally a full tank for you? Tank capacity is 19 gal, I believe.

Try again. You can go about 80 miles further than that. (It IS a 19 gallon tank.)

true, but when the gague is near the E, thats about 15 gallons to fill it up. its not good to run the tank down to empty every time. that will burn out the fuel pump(or some other device that controls the fuel).

Ive heard from some guru's there a 4 gallon reserve when the needle hits E.That would make it 19.

So if the TPS needs to be replaced, is this something I can do myself? It looks like it just plugs right in, right?

Take your battery cable off again but over night. Make sure you turn your lights on to drain left over voltage... Works for me

Not sure about the '97, but on a '93 you need to adust the TPS to set its' output voltage to between 0.40 and 0.45 VDC with the engine fully warmed up and idling in Drive with the brake applied.

An improperly adjusted TPS will affect idle speed, transmission shifting points/smoothness, engine cruising/OD lock-up rpms and gas mileage.

Since having the TPS replaced I have noticed that when cruising on the highway at 80 MPH the RPMS are at exactly 3000. I cant remember if this was how the car previously drove or not.

Does this sound normal?

How about at 70 MPH? I recall about 2800 RPM at that speed, when the engine is warm and throttle pressure is light.

Yes, it is right at 2800 rpms at 70 mph
