How to adjust tps?

Postby Junya » Wed Jul 23, 2014 1:56 pm

I recently replaced my tps on my 96 j30 and the videos on youtube were pretty straightforward except we have 2 connections on our tps.

I have my micrometer ready and looking for that 0.4v throttle but i dont know how or where to insert the micrometer leads. Thanks in advance.

get two paperclips and push them into connectors 1 and 3 until you hit the wire connections..attach voltmeter betw the two paper clips.....rotate tps slowly until you get 4.0 volts betw connectors 1 and 3

i must be doing something wrong guys. please excuse the ignorance.

so im pretty sure i installed my TPS "correctly"

I inserted a paperclip in the grey connector while still connected to the TPS in areas 1 & 3 and made sure it was making contact with the metal.

I turned the ignition to the ON position

I attached the multimeter/voltmeter to the paperclips and it reads 8.3V. When car is on and idling it goes to 9.5v . I am not able to adjust the TPS because it reads 8.3V or 9.5V constantly even at wide open throttle.

Hopefully someone can help me adjust it the correct way because im getting POOR gas mileage and a code for TPS.

Any help is appreciated!

I connected to the terminals 2 and 3 and had a reading of 8.3v. so nothing happened.

However

I connected the leads to 1 & 2 according to my microsoft paint diagram and it read 0.38v at the fully closed position. when i would adjust it to 0.45 it drops down and tighten the screws it would drop to 0.38 ALL THE TIME. The number does not increase either when i open the throttle!

im about to throw in the towel since im out of ideas.

You should use terminal #4 & #5 ON THE TOP PLUG of the tps to check the voltage. That's exactly what I did to check my 97 j30.

When you installed the TPS, are you sure you got the lever on the right side of the cross pin that rotates?

I just want thank: fourdrinine, J30inthe Sun, and especially exb57e. Thanks for helping.

The TPS was indeed installed incorrectly. the metal lever of the TPS should be installed on top of the Throttle body lever instead of being installed from under. You should NOT be able to open your throttle body with the tps (i was able to open the TB with the TPS installed incorrectly)

Nursing school is turning my brain into mush, maybe i should stick to medicine instead of cars. :P

It should be installed from the top and adjusted down

Leads 4&5 (4 is neg, 5 is pos) and it is adjusted to 0.45v

Thanks again everybody. now the next step is dealing with a dead injector in cylinder #4.
