How do you put in a new shifter?

I've made an attempt to put in a new shifter i'm a little afraid to screw it up so i need some advice.

I managed to pull off the whole knob itself but there is a plastic sleeve that goes over what looks like the a screw to put a new knob on, but i'm not sure.

If anyone knows how to do it please let me know.
