ok i just moved into my bros condo, we are going to have a wired network, no wifi. We will need about 6 connections to various rooms. i have a router that only has 4ports on it. The only room that will need two connections is my room, one for my laptop and one for my ps3. Can i just run one ethernet cable from the router into my room, then get an ethernet switch to split that into two for my lappy and ps3?? does this make sense?? help appreciated.

yes you should be able to do that, you may notice minor issues with speeds since a switch sends the data from one connection to all the other connections on your switch instead of intelligently routing it, but unless your seriously taxing your bandwidth i do not think you will notice.

A switch would work perfectly for what you want.
