Does anyone know what type I need and how much I should expect to pay? I might need one to tow a car on a dolly or something. Thanks in advance.

Get your hands a class 3 hitch with a rated tow capacity of 5000 pounds.

A class 3 hitch can be bought from many places like your local parts supplier or even a hitch shop. U-haul sometimes has universal hitches. Check them as well. You should expect to pay around 100 - 120 dollars.

Automotive Customizers (4x4parts.com) will also have what you need and it will be a bolt on unit, no drilling required.

The hitch will attach to the frame and sit just under your factory bumper or the roll pan.

Make sure you get the one with a max 5000 pound rating. Some class 3 hitches are only rated at 3500 pounds maximum. Remember you're not only towing a vehicle but the car dolly as well.

Hit the wrecking yards and look for Xterras & Frontiers. Many came with a nice drop/receiver Class III hitch that could easily be adapted for your truck.

Frame rail width is identical for the Hardbody, Xterra and Frontier and the mounting holes are in the same place too. (EDIT by Big-Bird)

Thanks for the replies guys I bought a Reese hitch off craigslist for $65 plus a ball drop hitch attachment. Although I don't need it yet, how do I connect the towing lights harness add-on onto the truck? Is the connector hidden somewhere? Also, on the bumper in the middle, it says I can only pull 2000 or whatever pounds--is that weight limit for the bumper only if I were to use it? I was thinking it is...

You will need to splice into your tail light wiring harness with your selected trailer harness.

You can go with a flat 4 ( This is the basic 4 wire configuration for tail/brake/signal light operation). There is common ground, power for the driving lights and a left and right signal/brake light power wires.

OR you can go with a 7 pin configuration if your trailer is going to have electric brakes of its own.

As for the 2000 pound tow capacity stamped on the bumper. You are correct. Its the rating for the stock bumper. Good enough for a loaded light utility trailer but thats about it.
