Has anyone installed one in their z? if so where did you get if from? Ive been looking for one for a while and havent found one for under 400 bucks yet, which is rediculous. Thanks for any input.

LOL LOL

i cant think of any other reason you would need a high power alternator other then to power an unneccesary amount of under car neons, hydrolics, and stereo equipment!

No, I dont have an excessive amount of neons, hydrolics, etc. however, my pos stock 80amp alternator died, and I dont want to put another 80 amp one on there because it isnt even enough to keep up with the normal everyday loads put on the electrical system (ie headlights, stereo). Yes I do have an amp but it is for my mids and highs and only draws 30a at most.

alternator replacment is a PITA, just becasue it's hard to get to

but I wouldn't replace it unless it quits working, sounds you you are throwing parts at an undiagnosed problem

yeah after i posted this thread earlier and went 2 go play some ball, as me and my co-worker were leaving my car wouldnt start and it WAS the alternator. lights didnt want 2 work, after my other friend gave me a jump my car wanted 2 die. i made it about 4-5 blocks with another jump along the way before i just called for a tow.

and my diagnosis was my stock battery was crappy so i changed 2 a yellow top, and the battery light would still come on at times so since its not the battery it had 2 have been the alt (which is was).

so now the stock replacement alt has 80 amps for 140$ and the high output has 160 amps for 300$. what do you guys think?

and how much am i looking at in LABOR costs.

I have no idea on labor, I'd suspect about 1 hour, shop rated will vary, any where for $80-120 hr

the extra amperage only helps if you have more than 80 amps of constant draw, chances are you don't, most high powered amps are 50 amps and thats a peak draw not a constant

'could just have a loose belt, or loose connection to battery, or any number of intermit. problems. alternators usually either work or not. a quick test would be to start and run the engine, then carefully disconnect the negative (ground) post at the battery. if the engine dies, the alternator is not working.

Always use the parts - factory or aftermarket - specific to your car, there are no universal parts (besides air fresheners).

are you sure it isnt your amp drawing to much power. maybe try installing a capacitor (1 fared is good to 1000 amps). or the amp isnt still on when you turn off the car?

Check ALL of your connections between the ALT, BAT and Starter, I had a similar thing going on until i replaced the battery terminals (way cheaper then a new battery or alternator) Our cars are plauged with crappy connections in wiring so check all that first.

Does anyone does know of a direct fit alternator with 100 Amp output or higher for a Z32? I have heard of I30's alternator will fit but the mounts are not the same

Should have gotten a red top. The yellow top is for extended drain. Like a boat or motor home.

I know where I work the labor time to do a alternator on a z32 is 1.3 hrs at $90 per hr. and its not to hard to do on your own if you have a few tools and a jack and jack stands.

No, blue top is a deep cycle for "extended drain" like a boat or RV, red top is starting only, and yellow top is starting and deep cycle and is exactly what you want in a car that is actually driven but has a large constant drain due to lighting or a sound system. Now my 2c: Optimas are complete and utter trash, they were great once upon a time but siince moving their ops to Mexico, their quality has suffered severely and failure rate has gone through the roof. AGM and Odyssey are the way to go but they are not cheap.
