It looks like you took this photo from below the intake manifold.

What is that thing on the bottom left, the back side of the starter?

It's most likely a vacuum tree. Its used to provide vacuum to several things on your engine, most notably the emmission control system.

The best way to remove this is with an open ended wrench. (Not an adjustable crescent wrench). IF the hexagon part broke free of the theads then you will need to use a special extractor tool or you can some times make a cut with a dremel tool and thin out the threaded portion from inside. The trick is NOT to dig into far and hit the aluminum intake manifold. Once the broken threaded portion is thinned out a good twist from pliers will usually break the damaged part free.

This is easier if you pull the manifold and do the work on a bench. You don't want any of the metal filings making their way into the cylinders. Then you would wreck the engine!

spray hell out of it with some penetrating oil and try the open end wrench. Let the penetrating oil soak for a while like 30 minutes then it may come out with not a lot of trouble.

Looks like a coolant pipe, what's wrong with it?
