A towell and a pair of channell locks. Wrap it well, so you don't tear it up, and clamp down tight. Twist off. I believe that tyou need to turn it counterclockwise. If you don't care about ruining the stock knob, skip the towell, and grab onto it with the channells or a huge pair of pliers!

The knob has 2 layers with the plastic knob. One leather or plastic piece(depends on car) and a rubber piece inside of that. Greese is between them the rubber part and the hard plasic shift knob. If you try and remove the knob you will probably see it slip if it is going to easy...

The shifter is glued on really tight. I had to heat mine with channel locks to take it off. Just heat it a little with a mini-torch. Not burn it. I also ripped and broke my stock shiftknob. Not like it matter cause I like my Voodoo shift knob... although. I would love to have the nice yet overprice momo knob... :-)

Hope this helps...

you dont need to heat anything up, just get some big plyers/channel locks/anything that you can squeeze real tight with and start loosening, if you have the leather on the ball still, that will slip so you may need to take that off first, just go at it hard and to the left.

OK I want to hear from someone that actually removed the shift knob from a 1999 Maxima SE. This thing wont move. It feels like the knob is a continuous piece with shaft.???? This a serious NO GO

I also called my local dealership, and a body shop that I know and have used. They both confirm the fact that on a '99 Nissan Maxima the shift knob will unscrew. Turn in a counterclockwise direction. The knob is installed with an epoxy (thread lock) on the threads. In extreme cases, heating the shift lever below the knob has been known to help. However this is not recommended, and Brad from the body shop says he will ruin a shift knob, and replace it with a new one, before he heats it up. He recommends getting an oversized pair of channel locks and really bearing down on it.

In case channel locks are called something different depending on location in the USA, here is a picture.
