How much smoke? and what color is the smoke? that'll tell you a lot when it comes to troubleshooting it, as well as how quickly did it start to smoke, gradually or "it was ok a second ago and now it's smoking bad"?
Here are a few reasons for smoking out of the exhaust...
Only when it's cold and goes away as it warms up: valve stem seals are worn, they'll smoke at startup but not when the engine is warm, Easy fix
It was fine one minute, now Thick white smoke: Blown head gasket, the water and coolant leak into the cylinder and turn to steam hence the thick white smoke, performance usually but not always decreases considerably, engine may be hard to start. Easy to moderate difficulty fixing.
Light bluish gray smoke that gets worse when you accelerate: That's the piston rings, this type of smoking is usually constant light smoking but can smoke much more heavily when you press on the gas. Overhaul time, you can just re hone the cylinders and replace the rings, but ya might as well do a complete overhaul if you're gonna do a ting job.
Black smoke: running too rich, it can be a hint of black smoke when you accelerate to a thick diesel like black smoke, check for a stuck choke or a very dirty air filter, can also e caused by a stuck float or a bit of dirt on your needle and seat valve.
