do you have an auto? did you actually check to see if oil is getting to your cams?

I dont think a failing oil pump would cause a whine, your whine sounds more like Power steering. What you should do is take a long screw driver(or a stethoscope.. hehe...) and put the tip of it on the PS pump, alternator, ac pump ect ect. Put your ear up against the handle of the screw driver and see if you can hear the noise through it. It will be pretty obvious when you find whats causing the whine.

While the engine is COMPLETELY cool and engine OFF, take off the oil cap and sticker your finger in and feel around and see if you get oil on your fingers.. at least that's what my dad did when my oil pump went.

you can check if oil gets to your cams by removing the oil filler cap and running the motor, you should actually see oil coating the cams as they move.

i figured you were an auto transmission. im willing to bet its your torque converter. they can make a noise that sounds like a PS pump whine when going out. check to see if it locks at highway speed, it should, if it doesnt then its defintely your TC.

well i dont know if there's a history of it, but wierd because ive had two verts both TC's went out on both cars. TC's wear out anyway, and if you got a lot of miles on the transmission, i would not doubt it.

here is a link, read it and learn about torque convertors, there's a diagnosis page that could help you figure out if this is the problem for sure. i know it says toyota, but it applies pretty much for all TC's. and like i said b4 when mine went bad they sounded like a power steering pump going bad. but they dont always make that noise.....

it broke down on me saturday night. i think the converter went on a a permanent hiatus. may need a new transmission or converter. I'm leaning on the tc bause it drove fine for about 10 miles then i just couldnt get any gear, towed it home.gota a transmission 4 sale?

Sounds like the answer to me...much less BS to go wrong in a 5-speed

well i agree on that. it wont won't even move. now i just need to source all that stuff to make it happen. yall think it'll be easier to do the whole engine and transmission swap instead of just the transmission? think it'll pass the MD emissions sniffer?
