I have a 96 I30 with auto. transmission and it has 115K miles on it.Tonight, I was driving home as usual and all of a sudden when I pressed down the gas padel to accelerate, the car wasn't accelerating. I saw the rpm goes up as usual but the car just wasn't moving any faster or felt like it has no power. I tried a few times to give it more gas, but no acceleration from the car. So I let it coast to a stop. I put it in PARK, then shifted it back to "D" and it drove fine again and I made it home...So now I am thinking is the transmission going bad?? After I got home, I tried driving it around the block hoping to reproduce the problem, but nothing happened. So, should I take it to a shop to have someone look at it?

Have a fluid exchange (flush) and pan drop and filter replacement done ASAP. It may buy you some time...

Do a search here on "transmission flush"

The trans fluid flush was done at 101k miles. Are the pan drop and filter replacemant a DIY?If all fail, does that mean my car is done?

I'm not sure what a transmission costs for the I30, but if your car is in good condition, I'd fix it... The I30/Maxima transmission has a reputation for being fairly bulletproof, so you may really want to consider getting it to a dealer to diagnose it. I'm not sure what it takes to replace the filter, but it definately should be done. You might also cruise over to http://www.maxima.org and run a search or two on transmissions. I hate to send you to another site, but that one is huge and any of the drive-train information should apply to your car.

Can you tell me the location of the transmission fluid reservoir so that I can check the fluid level. Would a low fluid level cause the car to shift into neutral out of the blue?

Cars are never done! Most cars live to see 2 or 3 transmissions [unless totalled].

Just have someone who knows how to read the hot/vs cold ATF level...do it.....as too low is almost as bad a too much.

On the old board, you mentioned you were going to ask a Jatco engineer about the effects of running an extra liter of ATF in the transmission.

Did you indicate there are indeed dire consequences?
