So I did a cvt pan drop and strainer replacement on my 18 rogue Friday. As I got on the road in front of my house, I heard a metallic clank and the large heat shield guarding the trunk area fell off in the middle of the road. What’s strange is there was never a rattle that loose heat shield make. I haven’t gotten under to see how to reattach it (it’s now 10 degrees outside) but it did seem to rust through where the nuts hold it on. It seems to be a relatively common occurrence, yet I haven’t found a sensible fix. More just “you don’t need it”. That may be true, but it’s was on there for a reason and I’d like to put it back. Any advice?

I haven't gotten myself to fix ours, but my plan was buying biggest washers possible to be able to "cover" those rusted out holes.

Yeah, I haven’t even kneeled down to take a look. It’s so cold today that I’m going to take a shower and put clean pajamas on and set in front of the pellet stove, eat chili and watch football. Looking at the heat shield, it’s clear that it only rusted around where the nuts were holding it. Which means that it’s going to be a whole lot of fun trying to get them off. In Ohio, it usually ends up with saying that I’ll just go without this heat shield. I thought about trying to find some sort of heat resistant under coating and just spray the cargo area. Not only would it help with heat, it should help with noise.

You need 1/4" or 6mm fender washers with at least a 1-1/4" diameter. I recommend soaking the studs with WD40 or PB Blaster a few days ahead of time, then put a ring of bathtub sealer on both sides when you reinstall the shield to mitigate future oxidation. You'll still get some corrosion because it's partly a galvanic issue (differential materials), but a neutral sealer will go a long way to limit it. Don't use parts-store RTV, those all use silicone polymer carriers which release acetic acid when they cure and can actually exacerbate the problem.

Nope. I don't think Nissan has put a single zerk on anything since about 1990. :lolling:

OTS2, is it possible to replace them with third-party, are there even third-party replacements available, and does it even make sense to do so?

The Rogue driveshaft U-joints are all staked and not circlipped. It's possible to replace them (there are vids out there) but you need to jump through some major hoops. I positively don't recommend it unless an OE joint fails and you can't afford a new shaft.

I kind of expected as much. :frown:
Hurrah for manufacturer imposed non-repairability :bang

I did the heat shield as well as just about every shield underneath this thing the other day. Not terrible with some large fender washers as long as you don’t mind being bitten by rusted fasteners and jagged sheet metal. I didn’t realize how much racket this thing was making until it wasn’t. Sounds like a new car again. I reinforced the shields around the flex pipes with some harbor freight stainless zip ties, which worked beautifully. All in all about $15 and a few hrs.

probably stupid question - staked means pressed in, am I correct?

No, it means they notch the yoke around the circumference after pressing it in, basically forming a permanent snap ring.
