The reason I ask is because common sense would say that adding that many layers is, for one, unnecessary and two, just plain crazy. I'm dealing with some negative feedback but wanted to see what others would think and what was expected of the product.

is it unnecessary... absolutely. you may even have trouble getting the headliner to fit over all of that. The human ear can only hear a specific range of frequencies and once you reach that limit adding any more isnt necessay, i would assume (like "terminal velocity" but with sound) because you cant hear it anyways. Kind of like computer gamers and how they brag about their setup can run 95fps on a game, yet the human eye is limited to a maximum of 32fps.

Anyone thinking that adding SIX layers of ANY product is going to have 6x the effect doesn't have a full comprehension of harmonics, vibration, and vehicle acoustics.

Actually, I think they're probably a few fries short of a Happy Meal - Probably a Honda Civic owner. :)

More doesn't always equal better. Besides, the roof might contribute to interior noise via resonance, but that's addressed with one layer (and typically, you just apply the deadener in the very center of the panel to dismiss ALL resonance). They need to read up on Constrained Layer Dampening and how it works.

If people want to be stupid, sell them 10 rolls of it - Maybe they'll install it incorrectly and it'll fall on their head and smother them - Problem solved. ;)

I did the entire interior of a 400-hp C5 convertible with GTmat and it was an incredible difference.

I believe we are being negatively reviewed for them to promote their or their friend's new sound deadener product. I won't name names but it's very obvious that a small smear campaign is going on. :tisk: The "customer" put 6 layers of our 80 mil on his roof but only used one layer of the other brand and claimed it was so much better. I'm not understanding his logic. But that's neither here nor there. I just wanted to see if anyone else thought his move was lacking common sense.

Hahahaha... Yeah, that's a bit questionable. I found the bogus "review". There's not "six layers" of GTmat on his hoopty - I only see one layer in the pictures, and the guy installed it incorrectly anyway.

Clearly, the "customer" is an idiot. :)

There's a local shop who got a "bargain" on the same stuff he's promoting, and there were two MAJOR problems with it:

1) The foil is flimsy. If (and when) it splits on installation, the Arizona heat will soften the butyl material (which will then get on your carpet / headliner / etc). GROSS. Have fun cleaning sticky black rubber off your upholstery.

2) The smell is intolerable. The VOC's that outgassed from that stuff after installation would make you sick - He removed it from the second car before the customer came back, because it smelled like burnt plastic.

Like I said, I've used GTmat for YEARS, and if there was something better out there, I'd own it.

Interesting to know! We are thinking of producing a video disproving his claim. ;)

I'll be installing GTMat 80mil on my 370Z doors soon. Darn rattles have officially driven me crazy.

I did the rear wheelwells on my C5 (removed the plastic liner and applied a layer on the exterior of the plastic wheelwell "shell", then reinstalled). It really cut down on the road noise from those sticky steamroller tires!

Awesome product guys. Thanks for the free sample.

the foil is pretty tough, no tears.
The backing is plenty sticky.
Easily applicable, great for the first timer.
Seems to work pretty well, cut down on vibration and unwanted chassis hum.

Maybe I messed it up somehow. I got your info and put you on the list. Looks like your sample shipped Saturday but may not have been picked up until today. I would say expect it Wednesday or Thursday. :)

^ i know i was jp. i just ran into a situation and id like to get a professional opinion.

The doors on the S13 chassis are very thin metal and hollow and they make a very loud hollowy cheap sounding bang when you close them. pulled the door cards off and i see several ways of attacking this.

1. applying deadener to back side of door card and calling it a day.

Image

2. Completely unbolt the inside metal panel and remove the opening mechanism, speaker & bracket and all to expose the inner belly and apply the deadener directly to the metal behind the window glass. Larger surface area and common sense would say that applying the product to the metal that is actually causing the noise will be much more effective.

Image

which would you do the card or the metal?

Go with the 2nd. I was supposed to get my doors done today but they pushed back the install. :(
