I've got an 07 Versa, leased new 9/08. It's been plagued with problems and I'm starting to think I own a lemon. Since the beginning, the AC grinds -loudly - when the car is turned on, when the heater fan is turned on, or any time it feels like it, then gets quiet. They've tried three times to fix it but it's still growling away. I also smell burning rubber occasionally.

Went through a few days where the car would be unresponsive when hitting the gas - then take off like a little rocket. This week it's a new thing: I know it's supposed to have CVC but I can hear it moving throught the gears and once in a while it doesn't seem to be able to shift into the next gear. When it finally does, it surges forward.

Anyone else with these concerns?

ThanksSheree

Not me. When you say CVC, do you mean CVT?

I have an 08 Versa SL that had the grinding ac noise and the dealer discovered that the freon level was to low and ruined the ac compressor so they replaced it under warranty, and it has been quiet ever since. That was 2 months ago and 4000 miles.

I don't have the grinding noise but everytime I turn on the A/C...during startup or on the road...it sounds like you flicked a door stopper "boing oing ing" or a few seconds. Other than that it works fine. Anyone else heard this?

check your state's lemon laws to see how many times a "non conformity" (defect that does not affect safety) has to be repaired before a car is considered a lemon. Make sure you also have/keep all of the service paperwork.

BTW... the A/C system on these cars is by nature a little loud. It is perfectly normal, when firing up the A/C system, to hear a noise similar to... well, I guess I'd have to say an electric motor that's being stressed. Again, this is normal. If it sounds like a can of marbles being thrown around all the time, that's NOT normal.

It's VERY sporadic, to the point that there's no sense taking it in to the dealership because they will never find it.

But the problem you describe with the transmission doesn't even sound possible with a CVT.

Is your Versa an S or SL?

Thanks for your responses. I took the car to the dealer Tuesday and met with the owner. I've bought every car I've owned for the last 16 years from them - figured I'd use that as leverage.

They gave me an 08 with 47 miles on it to use for the week. They wanted to drive mine more and also have me see if any of my issues were just the nature of the model. AC is quiet - sure, you can hear it, but it doesn't make you say WTF? It also has noticeably more pick up - specifically when heading up a long hill where it needs to down shift. I have to floor mine to get it to downshift - sometime it refuses. Highway driving is particularly interesting.

I was wrong, mine does not have CVT - it's a 4 speed automatic. Oh and it's an S vs SL.
