Since the beginning, the AC grinds -loudly - when the car is turned on, when the heater fan is turned on, or any time it feels like it, then gets quiet. They've tried three times to fix it but it's still growling away. I also smell burning rubber occasionally.
check your state's lemon laws to see how many times a "non conformity" (defect that does not affect safety) has to be repaired before a car is considered a lemon. Make sure you also have/keep all of the service paperwork.
BTW... the A/C system on these cars is by nature a little loud. It is perfectly normal, when firing up the A/C system, to hear a noise similar to... well, I guess I'd have to say an electric motor that's being stressed. Again, this is normal. If it sounds like a can of marbles being thrown around all the time, that's NOT normal.

This week it's a new thing: I know it's supposed to have CVC but I can hear it moving throught the gears and once in a while it doesn't seem to be able to shift into the next gear. When it finally does, it surges forward. [/quote]I've had the odd throttle surge issue on my 6-speed manual a few times. It's VERY sporadic, to the point that there's no sense taking it in to the dealership because they will never find it.
But the problem you describe with the transmission doesn't even sound possible with a CVT.
Is your Versa an S or SL?
