Post

Daughter recently graduated with BFA from ASU.
Was also told that her photography skills were worthy of sending her photos to magazines. In addition, was told she could make living doing her art.
Anyway, she is very talented and gifted.

So, she applied to a GD firm recently.
She was told that she was in the top three.
All three were given a 24 hour project for a client.
She turned it in on time. If the client chooses their design, they will be compensated.

Was told yesterday that she had the job if she wanted it, but had 24 hrs to decide.
She called back today (24 hrs later) to let them know that she declined based on the amount they were wanting to pay. They said that if the other two declined, they might counter the offer.

around 6PM they called to let her know that one of the other two accepted.
Also, the client chose her design!
But, the company wants her to make some changes and deliver to them by noon tomorrow. And, there may be 1 more round of changes......

So, I was thinking that she should request HALF of the compensation when she delivers the revised design tomorrow and get the other HALF once complete.

What do you think???? :gotme

Regardless, this should be good for her portfolio.
The client is a MAJOR Sports magazine and the display will be put in a national shoe store that is in almost every mall.
She has several irons in the fire!

Hmmm....guess it depends on the way the "challenge" paperwork is written. Is compensation based upon the initial design, assuming the winner would then be a employee and further "compensation" would be a salary? If so then I would think the design itself, being selected, should deserve full compensation with additional monies based on changes since she is not going to be an employee?

Of course, they could simply tell the client that they will have to use something else and she would then get no compensation?

There was only a verbal contract stating that if the client chose their design they would receive x amount. In addition, it's understood that a couple rounds of revisions is normal in that line of work.
I was just thinking, that at this point, she should request half now as a contractor.

Also, the amount per hour that they offered her was less than what she is currently making at the local musical instrument store without any degree. She isn't your normal spoil kid coming out of college that feels entitled. Rachel has been working at the store since she was 15 years old.

Yeah, 1/2 up front would be the way to go.

GD seems to take a while to earn anything.

She's been working for free for the past 3.5 years! (actually, we've all been paying...)
But, if she gets bored with
her full time GD job
her part time job at the music store
her part time job with a local photographer
her free lance photo work
her free lance painting
I'll send her your way! :yesnod
