Gear Indicator lights?

My 2013 M37 which I recently acquired has 2 rows of little holes in the aluminum console panel along side of the gear shift lever. I first thought thy were lighted gear indicators, but I have never seen them come on. What are they?

They should be lit. You can barely tell but the indicator next to "P" is lit in this press photo.

I'll have to check mine too...don't remember them being lit lol.

They do light up in red when a gear lever moves to given position. However, mine are so dirty from grime/ dust that I can barely see it in daylight.

Ok, now that I know what to look for, I can the little red lights, but are so dim as to be invisible in daylight. I cleaned them, but that didn't help. It seems like it would have been easier and better looking if Infiniti had simply backlite the gear letters. This feature and the non-functional speed controlled audio volume are the only items that I have found where Infiniti could have done better, IMHO. Otherwise, I really like the car.

The lights for the gear indicator are redundant and useless. The center of the instrument panel indicates what gear the car is in.

Yep, after looking yesterday I agree. Just 'old tradition'.
