Ok so for the past three months I have been building my KA and this weekend I finished the install. Other then a koyo radiator and nology hotwires, everything I put on to the car has been stock. Stock injectors, fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, everything. Well when I finally was readdy to start it up I smelled gas. I checked all the lines and clamps and saw no fuel leaking. Well come to find out my gas tank is leaking from the top where the fuel pump is. It stops leaking as soon as I undo the gas cap but as soon as I put it back on it leaks again. It did not do this before I removed the motor so I have no idea what could cause this. Anyone have any ideas?

Alright I did more research and found that the vapor line might be broken. However, throughout this project I have noticed that my SE has a lot of different things compared to a standard 95 240sx. So I am guessing that the fuel tank is probably the same though

Alright so I dropped the tank twice trying to deal with this. Come to find out there was a crack in the tank right near the strap. I tried to patch the crack with a fuel tank patch kit. I thought it was holding till i drove it down the street. I parked it in my garage and the leak was back. So I pulled the tank again and the patch completely fell off like it didnt even stick to begin with. well I filed the crack down with a pretty rough file and degreased the whole thing. I mixed up some JB weld and waited till it completly dried. then put another coat on top of that. I installed everything and it was looking good till I started it up. Guess what!!! F-ING LEAK!!! Aside from purchasing a new tank does anyone have another possibly option to fix this P-O-S. I just dropped 4 G's in my s14 and cant drive it cause this tank. I noticed there were a lot of people having the same problem and were trying to get Nissan to recall the tanks. I hope it works.

This thing is killing me. I think I am going to try something a bit different. There is a motorcycle shop here is town that can plastic weld. it is not a process that deals with sparks and such as a regular welder would do but it uses an item like a soldering iron to melt the plastic back together. I will ask them if they have ever done this to a motorcycle tank and if maybe the heat from the iron would cause a fire. If they can do it or are at least willing to try it might be something I will do. If the tank melts then so be it. If it workd out that they can weld it then maybe I will also see if they can weld a patch on top of the crack. I will keep you all posted

Yeah I have been looking around but it seems as though people want around 250 for a tank and then to have it shipped for 100... I can drive to pomona and get a new one for around the same price.

Mine did the EXACT same thing, from the exact same spot. It's actually common...

You have to replace it though. There are no fixes. I'd wait to find one for 75 or less.

Yeah, that is what I figure I would have to do but yesterday I plastic welded the crack. I took pics and all and was going to see if it held then post up a "how to" post. I have heard that a lot of people have the problem but I am trying to do anything I can to not have to spend a ton of money for a new one. I will sit on the fix for a week or so and if it holds i will post up the pics. I need to find a computer since all I have right now is my phone.

For all you gas tank leak guys... old motorcycle tanks were soldered from two halves to make a tank..now you don't use a torch.. you use a heated solder iron and flux and solder. I just completed a 1929 101 indian... it is a soldered tank...as for a car tank..I just finished a conversion of a 92 240SX engine swap with a 2008 350Z motor. I also swapped the entire body harness and kept all emissions. The 350Z used two fuel sensor pickups... I simply fabricated an additional "tower" to house one more sending unit, located it in the spare tire area, transfered the location to the tank and soldered it on with an iron.
It soldered just about as easy as soldering copper pipe. I pressure ckd it with air and water... no leaks, but to be sure I sealed it with tank sealer form eastwood, it's been in over Image
a year now
make sure to wash tank out first, use warm water, and DON'T USE A Torch
the silver in this pix is sealer I applied to the outside as well...patches could be soldered on the same way

I would try a new gas cap and a new gasket at the top first. Sounds like the cap is not venting pressure.

And.... you can weld a gas tank, with gas in it even.

I know that there is a crack in the tank now and as much as I would love to weld or solder it closed I have a plastic tank in an S14. I tried three times to fix it and got so fed up I just bought a new one. After all the things I tried I just could not get it to stop leaking. I got it pretty close with metal mesh from a screen door and plastic welding but it still dripped a little.
