So I got a 15 year sitting barn fresh 1982 for $100 which has a z24 8 plug motor in from what I have read on here. I cleaned the plugs put new tires on it new gas and fired it up ran up threw the woods for about 3 hours ran threw 2 small mud holes pulled out and the truck shut down, (Don't think the mud or driving had anything to do with it I didn't beat it just idled around) anyway after about 4 min. of cranking it fired up and it ran for aprox. 1/4 mile then shut off and is now dead in the water, I found that I was not getting any fuel to the accelerator pump. looked in a little deeper and found now power at the fuel pump, traced that and found an ignition power wire rubbing on the frame of the seat I repaired that replaced the fuse and now have good power and ground at the pump, plugged it in the first time and hummed for aprox. 3 sec. then shut down truck still won't start. I removed the inlet fuel line to the pump and the line was dry guessing I have a bad pump but wasn't sure I'm a diesel mech so the hole none gear driven fuel pump/ spark plug thing gets me at the moment but we are getting better do the fuel pumps on these hum vibrate or anything to let you know if they are running or is it possible the pick up tube in the tank was rusted and broke off. any help is appreciated  I have a very limited budget and don't wanna buy a fuel pump if I don't need to.

Anything's possible as far as the pick up tube. That would be the least likely thing though. If you can, check the power at the pump. It should hum for a second at the first turn of the key. Unless you think the tank is fouled enough to plug the tube I would be looking at other things. Check the inertia switch. On occasion they go bad. I would have to look in my book to tell you where it is. Will do it Saturday if you don't post a resolution.
Good Luck!

I'll bet you checked and or replaced it, but it sounds like a fuel filter to me, or maybe some junk in the tank, i have an aftermarket pump on mine, first thing i had to replace, about 50 bucks at aut ozone ,it hums, a little louder at first, but it always runs if the ignition is on,
hope this helps

fuel filter is good I was thinking about stuff in the tank it was ran dry when they parked it but you never know. whats an inertia switch? truck had some farm boy ingenuity done to it in prev. life. the fuel pump relay has 4 wires going to it instead of 6. the relay clicks when I plug it in. no power at the pump also I am pretty sure I have a good ground, if I connected a wire to the battery right to the pump nothing happens and the entire pick up tube is dry up to the pump. no noise at all. been lookin at it for 4 days now. but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to run a hot wire threw the fire wall to a toggle switch then run a new wire to a new inline fuel pump with a regulator only question is how much fuel pressure do these norm run stock was thinking about 7psi but thats just a guess. that way I can match up the pump or at least get one that will supply enough. looking at the harness in this thing (pretty hacked) its going to be a trip figuring what all they did. on the + side everything else mechanical works good as long as it gets fuel that is.

I would say that if you hooked the pump up straight to the battery and it didn't work its most likely bad, not sure if this link will work,
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... 987_1001_0_
this is what i put on mine, my harness is in pretty good shape, so it was crimp and go, i did have hard times getting the pump to prime, a little air pressure at the filler cap pushed the fuel up to the pump, I would suggest you hook the new pump to a ignition switched wire, might save from coming out to a dead battery
you will have to ask dirtdog about that inertia switch, don't think mine has one, its a switch to shut your fuel pump off in an impact, i think
hope this helps

I'm looking in my book (Haynes Repair Manual for 1980-1997 Trucks) and I don't see anything on the inertia switch. Flyn Z is right about the function, it also shuts off the fuel pump if it is upside-down. Either way I don't think that's the problem.
According to the book, fuel pressure for 83 is 3.1-3.8 psi (electric) for 84 &85 is 2.7-3.4 psi (electric)
Good luck

thanks for the help guys installed new fuel pump and lines I swapped terminals in the 16 pin connector by the seat so the power feed for the 4x4 light on the dash now runs the fuel pump its always in 4x4 anyway, replaced the blown out clutch master cylinder and freed up the slave cylinder it was locked up tight from sitting. now I just need to install new breather tubes and change the diff oil. and she will be ready to get swamped in the mud hole this weekend :chuckle:. next is fab up a lift and get some 410 gears and get some 36" tires for it.
