Hi everyone,

I am literally steps from purchasing a G37x, sedan. I am just in love with these cars. Have wanted one since they changed the style in 2007. I need a new car now, so I want to buy one, even though, it probably doesn't make sense for me, financially :s

Anyway, I was told that you SHOULD use premium fuel in the 37, BUT one of the men at the Infiniti dealership says that the sedans are ok with regular fuel. The computers adjust and work regularly, I just wouldn't get as much performance (less hp...which is probably a good thing for my heavy right foot anyway) :p Is this true?! I'm hearing various things and need to know this before purchase. Will it pose ANY issues towards the engine later on?

Also I hear that repairing these cars is quite ridiculous financially. Any insight would be great before I purchase.

Thanks everyone

i wouldnt buy any car if it wasnt in my finances... thats just my opinion...

But if you have a "heavy foot" it'll be in your best interest to use premium gas to avoid knocking/pinging of the engine. The owners manual states "premium required", but "its ok" to use regular/mid-grade for short periods of time with the G37. If you want to use regular gas i'd suggest getting a G35 sedan were "preminum is reccomended". But again with a "heavy foot" and regular gas in a G35 sedan you still have a higher risk of pinging/knocking of the engine.

i dont know how else to word this, but if you worried about paying for premium gas you might want to get another car. The g37 is good MPG wise on the highway with the 7th gear (i get 25+ mpg), but SUV like in city MPG (i get 16-18 mpg).

You are correct. Let me correct myself. I CAN afford the car. I'm just still unsure if I want to commit so much to a car. That's what it is.

My 'heavy foot' is controllable. :p

Thanks for your input.

if you are driving mildly you will probably get away with regular gas...

I've yet to meet to a person that had buyers remorse after purchasing a G, i loved my G35x so much that i upgraded to the G37x. Just a great drivers car with luxury to boot. Also its the best luxury/sport deal out there compared to BMW 335i, ACURA TL, Benz C class , Lexus IS ... none of these other cars can beat the price of a (prem + Nav) equiped G37 and all have less Horse Power in their V6 engines.

when i compared the G won me over twice.

Have 7500 miles or so on mine now. Have only used 89 and it runs great. Was told as long as you don't mix it's fine. 89 is the same price as 87 at Kwik trip so it doesn't even cost more. :dblthumb:

What about a low mileage 08 G35X ?? :gotme
If prem. is a concern.
We put REG in our 05 G35 AND drove it thru the NC mountains without any spark knock.
However, I've yet to put reg. in our 08 G35X, but assume it would be fine.

(The only reason we put reg in the 05 was because it was back when gas was in demand and prem was not available.)

Well, the knock sensors will adjust the motor to keep knocking down. This is what can cause poor gas mileage.

Yeah, ECU will just add more fuel to keep knock/etc from happening.

I personally wouldn't want to run anything below mid (89) in the VQ engine. I ran 93 in my Pathfinder the whole time, friend bought it from me and I believe is running 87 or 89 in it and a few years later it doesn't sound good.

Eek! I have been putting 93 in one tank and 89 in the next fill up. Thought I was being smart. I won't do that again. Never thought about that.

I doubt driving with a heavy foot will make any difference, regardless of which fuel you use the ECU will listen to the knock sensor and dial back the timing advance (which reduces power). Mixing two grades of fuel won't make any difference, the ECU will adjust. (But I wouldn't switch back and forth tank to tank, because the ECU adjusts slowly and will always be playing catch-up.) Also, in my experience pinging & knocking usually happens during light acceleration, not heavy.

In the end, you might as well run the recommended octane fuel. If you run cheap stuff the engine will dial back the timing and you'll just burn more fuel, so money-wise it's probably a wash.

Thanks CO. Good info.

I'm going to tell the Policeman....but officer, I was trying to keep my engine from pinging. :chuckle:

Had two 4x4 pathfinders at one time. both VQ
One auto and one manual.
I could get away with lower octane in the manual.
Lower octane in the auto would knock.
Personally, I wouldn't go any lower than the middle grade even with a manual.

If you change gears too early & give it too much gas is when you normally hear the knock in a manual.
