2005 Maxima, 90K, good condition. One of my front struts is beginning to tear. Do I replace all four?

thanks! I take good care of my car but I'm no mechanic!

The strut is tearing or the black boot cover is tearing?

As far as I can tell, just the black boot covering. It's beginning to tear. I don't know about the actual condition of the struts, but the car is driving smoothly. Soon I'll replace the tires, so if I'm going to replace struts, I guess that's the time; I can get a good price on the two together.

How can you actually tell if the struts need to be replaced? I have 90k on the car. LA in town driving, mostly 15 mile four and three lane driving. I'm pretty easy on the car, in general.

thanks for any info you can provide!

You can buy replacement boots.

If the car is driving smooth and it doesn't bounce or slam excessively when going over bumps, I wouldn't worry about it. just replace the boot.

I believe the suspension has held up pretty well. Still, it does have 90k. Is there any rule of thumb regarding struts?

And thanks Scott, MTZ130,Tiger. I want this car to last a while, at least 150, so I tend to baby it.

No rule of thumb. Just replace them as needed. You should have no problem going beyond 150k miles with proper maintenance.

So Max,

What happened was, I stopped into Midas for their special 20 dollar oil change. I know, it was stupid, and I usually don't do that. They told me the rubber boot was tearing and sooner or later I'd need new shocks. But the car drives very well, and, as I mentioned earlier, I'm no hell driver. I do, however, need new tires soon. So then I'll replace the boot, and certainly have the struts checked by a suspension guy I trust.

Alignment is good because tires are wearing evenly.

What other maintenance do struts need? Adjustments?

thanks!

None, but definitely get that boot replaced. I was referring to overall vehicle maintenance.
