Hey Gang, Ive had woes with my 97Qs transmission shifting since ive bought it with 70K on it. It does the 1-2 hesatation and shifts kinda harsh the rest of the gears. Whats odd is if i drive a few miles stop and restart the car within a couple hours it drives like a different car(very wierd). Ive been changing the fluid in the pan about every 10-15k miles since i bought it (changed the filter once at about 72K currently have 114k). I am using the Lubegard black as recommended on here, that has seemed to help a little bit. OK now on to the "slip" light flashing, Im in Phoenix so it never gets really all that cold as some of you would say:). In the AM i start the car its usually about 50 in my garage...When i engage Reverse with the foot on the brake the "SLIP" light flashes 2-3 times. Is this an indicator or diagnostic code telling me theres a problem?

Thanks!

You are describing the classic transmission symptoms caused by sticky 'varnish' in the valve body. As it warms up, the stickyness lessens. You might try adding a full can of Berryman's fuel system cleaner to the transmission, running it a few hours, and then completley flushing the transmission WHILE HOT.

The Berrymans will not harm the seals or clutch linings, but will remove the varnish film

I always get the "Slip" light in my G35 Coupe everytime I take a turn at 45 MPH:D . But from what I know about the 2nd gen, the slip light flashing at start up means that there is a problem with the ABS/Traction control system. The slip light has nothing to do with the transmission. Those transmission's on the 2nd gen Q's are pretty strong...

Terry,

I once had a code thrown that indicated ABS/TCS possibly needing replacement. I also had TPS sensor code. The Nissan dealer I took it to said adjusting the TPS could clear up the ABS/TCS codes which it did. Pretty expensive on the ABS/TCS. Something like $1200. Don't remember if it was before or after the adjustment but I had the "slip" light flash in reverse also.

there is a self diagnostic system built in to the TCS/slip computers. Refer to the thick maintenance manual. The dignosis routine is quick and easy and very detailed--pointing clearly to the offending part/adjustment/system.

Note the TCS does not 'save' the codes on shutdown, so you have to keep the car running while you read thepulses off the tcs module (located in the trunk just aft of the left hand speaker.)

I may try the Berrymans...One question can i drive the car with that stuff in the transmission or is it like engine flush...you just let it idle?

you can drive with a can of Berryman's cleaner in the transmission fluid. Do not drive too long at high temps or the stuff will all evaporate andleave the varnish behind
