..but who has 56k anymore?
So, I went down to my first event. I knew of one person from 240atlanta (a local forum I post on) that was going to be there for sure but that was it. I got to the lot around 9:30-9:45 and had no idea where to go or what to do. Finally got situated, was sitting there for a minute and some dude came up and tapped on my window. It was the guy from 240 ^, so that was cool. He was about to be doing his runs so he had to go. The worse part was not knowing anyone, I kind of just watched everyone most of the time. Since I've never autocrossed and never drove at a soloatlanta event, I signed up as a novice driver. That means that I wasn't in for points, they take the novice drivers (max 20) and teach them some of the basics of autocrossing and all that jazz. You get 4 runs, we got lucky and got 5 runs as novice, so we could get a feel for it a little more I suppose. A driving instructor rides with you on your runs, helps you along the way and gives your tips/advice. Which was great, she helped a lot. On my first run I didn't hit any cones but I did go on the wrong side of one, causing a DNF and I ran the track in 81.113 seconds. My second run, I got the right side of everything, but I hit one cone. Ran a 75.702 second lap but add 2 for the cone. Third run dropped a tad to 75.095. Fourth run did the same to 74.565, but I didn't hit a cone! It was my first completely clean run. They told us we MIGHT get 5 runs, earlier in the day. Everything was running behind, like an hour or so behind schedule and I saw some people in my run group of novice jump in their cars, so I walked over to mine and the coordinator said to get in line. I was like, hell yeah and jumped in. No instructor this run. I ran a 72.856 clean no penalties. I think I do better without someone coaching me, but I think if she hadn't helped me on the previous runs I wouldn't have done as well. Since I was in novice my times don't really count, but.. the average times for the day were 70s-80s, jumping up to 90s some and as low as 55 (not many that low, more in the 60s). It was a LOT of fun and I'll be going to any autocross events that come up within a decent distance
There was a kid from 240 taking pictures, I saw him but didn't know him. He recognized my car and took some shots:
