I recently purchased a 1995 Maxima GLE with a blown motor. I purchased a used motor with 108000 miles on it. The motor they sent me was from a 2000 I30. I switched the valve covers, upper and lower intake manifold, front exhaust manifold, and modified my vacuum so it would work around the water pipe from the I30. Now the car runs great when it's cold, but as soon as it warms up, it runs like crap. This is my first Nissan, and I've read alot of the forums here. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to do next. I keep getting EGR, and MAF codes. I still have all the I30 parts so I can do any necessary swaps. I'm just not sure where to go next. I really need this car up and running. It will be my daily driver, I won't be modding it, I just want it to be smooth, and dependable. I'm really short on cash, so any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

If its the MAF the vehicle wont run very long. While the vehicle is started disconnect the
maf connector to see if the engine runs better. If so its probably the MAF. This has worked for me a couple of times in the past. Some people have cleaned theirs but I didnt have luck with this.

The EGR valve might be stuck in a closed position so if you can get a friend to rev up the
motor while you feel to see if the valve is moving that might be it. Otherwise you might
have to look at several components of the EGR system. You should be able to do a search
for EGR problems on this website for that information

Thank you, I'll check that out. I've been seeing something about the I30 motor being a VVT motor, and I might have to use the intake and some other parts from it, to get it to run right. Still looking into that though.

Perhaps this might help. I've read alot of posts on alot of forums, and they all seem to deal with putting De-K top end on the DE motor, I did just the opposite. Is that going to have any negative effects on the car and the way it runs?

You say the engine runs like crap when its warm

Check to make sure the engine is sound.
Do you have compression?
Is water vapor coming out of the exhaust?
Is oil in the radiator?
Is water in the motor oil?
I hope its not a head gasket

Did all the checks, no oil, no water where they shouldn't be. I noticed if I grabbed the air box and shook it, the car would die. Hmmm...so I changed the MAF, car runs great now. The only issue remaining is that sometimes it won't idle down after highway trips, driving to work, get off the highway and pull into the lot, in park it revs at 1200, but it's intermittent, and I need a stock quiet exhaust, trying to find one is a pain.
