All of the threads/tuts i've seen here showing peoples electric fan conversions have started with the clutched fan.

My 81 has the factory non-clutch water pump, and I'm wondering if anyone's successfully converted one of these models to run an electric pull-fan, or if I'd have to run a push fan in front of the radiator due to clearance between the pump and radiator?

I do mostly highway driving, and have a 4-speed, so I feel it would be a worthwhile mod for my truck.

If anyone has any pictures of the engine compartment with one of these pumps w/o the fan, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Do you happen to have a picture of yours? If it is anything like mine, space is tight. I simply went with a small radiator out of a Honda Civic, however, and placed it off center. It kept it from being in the way.

Here is a pic...

Plenty of room for a beefy fan. I'm having a hard time deciding between a fan from summit racing (more $$, but KNOWN CFM rating,) vs. picking up a Tercel fan from the yard for $25 (But no idea how much air it moves.)

Choices, choices. Plenty of space, either way :bigthumb: Not sure why our trucks are all so different. It feels like the factory just had a box of miscellaneous parts that they randomly chose from when they built these trucks.

Ugh. Decided to go the retail route and bought a perma cool 12" "2300cfm" fan.

The thing is absolutely overrated. I've heard what a 2000-3000cfm fan sounds like, and this is not it. The fans on a BMW or Audi sound like a small aircraft preparing to take off, this just sounds like it's suggesting the air move through the radiator.

Anyways, I got one of those $18 pot-switch adjustable thermostats from Autozone, and took an hour or so getting it set so it would kick on just as the temp need is 'floating' upright but if my temps don't hold steady come July and August I'll probably be stuck buying a second fan.

Looking good for now. 2-3 hour project, start to finish. No noticeable gains in the seat-of-the-pants department, but we'll see what fuelly has to say over the next few weeks.
