I may have a 99 model with a bad ECU. I can get an ECU from a salvage yard.

Can an ECU be swapped on a 99 model without having to take the car to a dealer for reprogramming because of keys and the security system codes?

Thank you,
CS

I believe it has to be programmed by the dealer for the keys.

Not all 99 models have NVIS/NATS (Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System/Nissan Anti Theft System). Some have just Theft Warning System. There are 2 simple ways to verify it:
1. Get a key duplicate. If the duplicate can start and run the car, you don't have NATS; if the car won't start or starts but dies immediately, you have NATS.
2. Check if your car has IMMU (Immobilizer Unit) below the instrument panel (refer to EL-295 from the link below). Presence of IMMU indicate you have NATS.

So if your car is equipped with NATS, you have no choice but to have it programmed at dealership if you replace the ECM. The Ignition Key ID is stored in both IMMU and ECM. If there is a mismatch, the car won't start.

The guys for the information. The car is an I-30. I've read some information about the swapping the ECU, TCU, and EGR back to a 1998 model. Of course that is IF I could get those 98 model parts from a salvage yard. I know the going price for a 99 model ECU around here is $50. I might be able to get the local Nissan dealer to reprogram it for a lot less than it would cost at the Infiniti dealer -- that is if they will do it at all..

Last night I looked at the car. It is not a bad car for $350 -- though at 245,000 miles I know it is nearing EOL. The owner doesn't want to dump another $900 into it for an ECU from the local Infiniti dealer. The alternator, fuel pump, and radiator have been recently replaced.

I was thinking about getting it as a project car for my 14yo son who is quite good at working on his brothers 95 Maxima. So now I'm thinking about it while the owner waits for the title to arrive from the Dept of Motor Vehicles.
