My brake light on my dash suddenly turned on when I was driving on the highway home today. I stepped on the brake and it turned off for 2 seconds and turned back on. I also engaged/disengaged the ebrake and the light does get a little brighter when I engage ebrake. I looked at the brake resevior and it is full to the top so I know its not the fluid level. I also tapped on the resevior to see if the float is stuck, but it seems ok. I also tried unhooking the sensor on the bmc and the light still stays on. Any suggestions?

When this happened to my Maxima and Altima I had to replace the alternator very soon. Check the output with a multimeter.

it could possibly be related to your ebrake handle not disengaging from the handle sensor. Take off the boot and clean it, because it gets pretty dirty down there. At least that's what happend to me.

My SAFC II reads 14.3V so I think I'm ok with the alternator.

Check the alternator a few times while the motor is running and after a restart. Mine had a bad diode and when I checked it it would read 14.5 for 15 minutes then change to 11.9. Usually when I turned ot off and restarted it would go to lower. After getting stuck several times I went to a Nissan dealer and was told the diodes were N/G.

There are two main possibilities: the float switch and the ebrake switch. Both must *not* be connected to ground for the light to be off. Double check these. You can unplug both to eliminate the switches themselves.

I suspect it may be the bulb check relay - it will bypass the ebrake switch to illuminate that dash bulb on startup. You can pull this relay out and see if you still have the problem. Be sure to re-install when done.

Also you didn't mention - do you have HICAS (4-wheel steer)? This also ties into the brake bulb.
