Yes, you definitely still have to change the filter at regular intervals.

I use the Mityvac 7201 on my bimmer (same engine as the E46 M3). See http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-...r=8-1

It has a fluid evac mode as well so after you've pumped all the oil out of the car, you can then dispense it from the pump to a container for recycling. Tip: drive the car for 15-20 min, shut it off and pump the oil out while it is hot.

Before someone say changing oil this way is a bad idea because it doesn't drain out any metal particles in the pan, let's use a bit of common sense. The job of the oil filter is to catch these particles. If there are metal particles present in your oil pan, then you have serious engine problems. Extracting oil with a "topsider" is perfectly safe.

How does one go about recycling the old oil? Is there a fee?

Most auto parts stores in our area, like AutoZone and Advance, accept used oil.

Any Wal-Mart with auto servicing will accept both used oil and batteries. At least they do in the Dallas area. McKinney, TX has a high-efficiency, ecologically friendly proto-type store that burns the used oil their own personnel drain during oil changes as the store's boiler fuel. Oil brought in to them from outside goes into a separate tank for sale. I suppose they make extra $$$ selling it to recyclers as bunker oil.

As others have mentioned, you can take it to the mentioned auto parts stores. You can also:

1. contact your waste disposal company and see if they accept used motor oil2. contact your local city government (some have waste disposal plants that will accept used oil)3. try http://earth911.org/ and use that green search bar at the top of the page
