i have a 1998 frontier - stock 4 cyl 5 speed

It runs very well, initially i had to fix the MAF when i first got the truck.
I made the mistake, apparently, of clearing the computer by removing the battery terminals. This causes the 5 monitors to show not ready, until the drive cycle is completed...

My problem now: I went to have the emissions done (i live in Phoenix) and was told it's not emissions ready, it did not fail... It does not throw ANY codes at all, ever.

What i've done: Bought an ODBII scanner - run the drive cycle per the owners manual, but cannot get the EV (evap canister) part to complete. This is resulting in it not being emissions ready, causing me to not be able to complete emissions, in turn preventing me from driving my truck, causing me alot of agrevation.

My question/request: has anyone experienced this? What can I do, where can I get the parameters or information on the drive cycle for the EV to complete? What part of the drive cycle checks the EV. i have searched google/nicoclub forums extensively without gaining what i need to fix this.

I hook up the scanner and drive the truck and complete 4/5 parts, i can verify this while driving. The problem is, when you shut off the vehicle it starts over. Meaning you have to complete 5/5 all in one shot or your vehicle wont be emissions ready. i've heard nissan horror stories of "hung" drive cycles lasting more than 2 years.

I have gone through all the vacuum lines, replaced any that were bad, inspected the canister vapor valve (cleaned & verified it works), done the drive cycle like 12 times, driven the truck over 400 miles with no luck. I am out of temporary tags, i am now driving without registration still trying to solve this.

Is there a way to trick the computer into thing its completed the EV? i'd rather have it done right, but at this point i'm getting desperate.

i mean no disrespect - but i dont need any flaming from the people who say "use search", i have... i'm not one to ask for help without exhausting all my own resources first, i'm very mechanically inclined. I'm proficient in searching out solutions and using them.

Thanks in advance for anything useful that results from this post, i need it.

You should check with your State to see if they allow a certain number of monitors to remain "not ready". Many States allow no more than 2.

Your 98 may have been produced in 97 so this bulletin may still apply. Try searching for NTB98-018c.

The charcoal canister on my truck is underneath the bed near the spare tire holder, I'm not sure about your Frontier, but it is only a year different and many things are similar.

There is a long, metal vacuum line running the all the way to the engine bay; and rubber vacuum lines attaching the metal lines to the canister and whatnot, I think there is even some kind of electronic solenoid back there, but it has been a while since I saw those parts up close as they are hard, if not impossible to see without the bed or spare tire off. Maybe they can be reached with just the spare tire taken down, I'm not sure.

Do not know if this helps but on my honda civic to get the evac test to complete the fuel tank had to be above 3/4 full. After filling the gas tank up the test initiated afyer driving to 60mph for 5 minutes then coasting down to 40mph without hitting the brakes

That is because Nissans must be taken to the dealer to have the Computer reset, This is the only way.
