I have what appears to be a starter problem, intermitten starting. Turn the key and nothing, no sound, no clicks, nothing. Try it several times and nothing. Wait a day and it starts like there was no problem. Turn it off and try again, and nothing. COme back later and it starts.

I have read that before I jack it up and replace the starter(if anyone has a trick or two to get at it, please reply) I can check to see if it is a relay that might have gone bad. THe relay that is always referred to is part # 25230 89981. I have checked just about everywhere under the hood and do not find this "inhibitor" relay. I have seen pics and the description, but nothing.

Anyone know where this relay may be hiding? Any assistance is appreciated. Also any tips on how to remove the starter. It looks to be a challenge to remove. SOmething else has to come off in order to remove it.

Thanks!

pretty sure your truck does not have one, if it did, it should be on the right side, about 4-5 inches behind the battery, big blue, double relay..you might have a ignition sw going out...

first and easy check wiring connections on starter also. A loose or rusted connection can do that stuff. it is easy and free, so try it first before tossing parts. Also when it will not crank or turn over does the dash lights come on fully? connection on battery stater or grounds could be bad or loose or rusted.

I went under the assumption that my truck did not have the specific relay. And I did not want to risk frying something else "experimenting" around with the electrical.

I went ahead and replaced the starter. It took a good hour to remove. I had to remove the fuel filter bracket, disconnect the cable to the carburator. I then removed the top mounting bolt and then the bottom mounting bolt. Once I removed the starter, I disconnected the main power line and disconnected the smaller connector. It would be nearly impossible to disconnect the electrical cables when the starter is still in place. Save yourself the frustration and bleeding knuckles.

I squeezed the starter out through the top. You may have to try a few approaches depending on what wires, lines, etc you have to navigate thru.

I took it to Autozone to test. It passed the first 2 test fine, but when it gone to the solenoid, it made a loud grinding noise and then stopped. So it was a bad solenoid. I just purchased a new starter/solenoid(the only way they come) and took another hour reinstalling.

Thanks to everyone's input.
