i currently have an 89 240, and it has 149,xxx miles on it, i am the second owner and i bought it when it had 147,xxx miles, i live in southern cali and in june, i'm moving up to northern cali, and my mom's telling me to just get another car, a more reliable car, so i was thinking, maybe i'll just get an MR2 for about 5 g's, and then i thought, i can get an sr20 with that money... i really want the MR2, but i can't live without my 240, lol, i was thinking that, get the MR2, and then later on when i have money, just buy another 240 and drop in an SR, but, give me your insight guys, thanks

the Mark II generation, the 91-94's, the problems in my 240 are the clutch is slipping, i have weird hissing noises from the rear, my passenger side doorlock is busted, the front bumper is sort of scratched, and my driver's seat doesn't stay up! lol

I think it all depends on the MR2. If its the turbo version...I would check the mileage and see anything has been done to it cause most turbos are driven the heck out of them and stuff. If its the NA model.....it shouldn't be that bad. I hear there not to bad...slow...but runs good. I would probably get an MR2 if it has really low miles and runs good (.e. timing belt has been changed and doesn't burn any oil)

I hear on the MR2's, if its got the T tops, you got to check to see if its leaking cause I hear they do that a lot.

Guys, it all depends on what you want in a car.. MR2's are nice peppy, good handling cars, but they're small, cramped, very little luggage space and will be more expensive to maintain than your 240. Plus the 1st generation ones are ugly. If you're looking for a commuter car, MR2's are not a bad choice, But if you intend to go on longer trips, and want to include more than a one small overnight bag, you don't want an MR2. I have 188,000 miles on my '89 240sx, and she still runs great. 147K is not a lot of miles for a 240sx.

So long as the cooling system (radiator, etc) is good, and you're not burning oil, you'll be fine. I've made the drive from south to north and back again, via both the 5 and 99 many times. A few times, I did it in a pretty mechanically questionable, Datsun 510. And trust me, if that car can make it... your kinda clutch slipping, dinged fender 240 can. :)

my 90 240 has 200k on the clock and is missing a golfball sized wad of gear teeth from the transmission. I still trust this thing more than I trust my '99 cavalier with 50k on it.

keep the 240...

Dude if I were you, I'd just by the MR2 and keep the 240, and eventually you'll save up enough for the SR, and along the way you might do some work to the MR2, and you'll have not one, but two sweet cars. I know this will cost a ridiculous amount of money and a LOT of patience, but the end result will totally be worth it. I started that notion when I got my 240, " I'll just drive this around and try to preserve my civic", now it's the other way around, and just seeing them both parked next to each other in the garage is one of the best things in life. But if you're gonna get an MR2, I would recommend going for the NA model for now, since it will probably be easier to find one in good condition, it would most likely to be cheaper, and the insurance cost for two cars is a *****. about a quarter of my income is spent on my cars insurance. Maybe down the road you can get a 3sgte for the MR2, it'll still eventually cost you less than what you'll be paying for insurance on a turbo MR2 in the long run. Hope everything works out well buddy!

I've made more than 10 trips between central TN and south AL (6.5-8 hours depending on how much of a hurry i'm in) and never had a problem other than an appearantly bad busing in the front end that makes it a big vibraty (I know its not a word). My clutch is **** and several other things are too but I still love my car.

Keep the 240 and fix the little problems that bother you. It will save you alot of money and headaches down the road. You will not spend $5k or even near that replacing a clutch, fixing a seat, and maybe even a new paint job. MR2's are a pain to work on, and toyota is expensive if you bring her to the dealership. Not to mention insurance. Since the MR2 is only a 2 seater, it will be alot more than your 240.

Keep the 240 and save up for the SR20.
